Historia
In the vast expanse of the cosmos, where stars twinkle in the night sky and galaxies swirl in the abyss, a remarkable dance of light and matter unfolds—a dance that has captivated the human imagination for centuries. This dance, illuminated by the science of spectroscopy, is what this book seeks to explore and explain. Spectroscopy, the study of the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation, may sound complex and esoteric, but at its heart lies a simple and profound idea: The colors of light can reveal the secrets of the universe.

Why did audible even allow this to be on the site? It has less value than reading an index of word definitions.

Historia
Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science - as well as religious and cultural institutions - has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing....

Important and worthwhile.
Revisado: 11-01-21
The book was great. It provided wonderful insights into how our species has evolved.
I read reviews of this book prior to selecting it, and I was a bit anxious about it. It seems many people are put off by the oddest of things. For instance, many thought that they did too much squabbling over historic treatment of this topic, and/or going over the same territory of past theories, multiple times, to the point that it annoyed some readers.
I didn't find this to be the case. There are many, many, ways prior scientists have characterized findings. This is a broad topic after all, and more recent data and findings have provided more objective insight. Thus it may seem like a lot of repeating but it's simply doing a thorough job of disputing prior conclusions.
Readers might appreciate (I could anyway), there is much history and prior speculation on these topics which the authors had to consider.
Reviewers also questioned that there was a lot of disputing the past findings without putting forward a new compelling theory. Again, I did not find that to be the case. There seems to be a misunderstanding, by some readers, about how new data and new science is used. It only takes one scientific study that showing improved results/data/objectivity or shows inaccuracy of prior studies findings and techniques, in order to refute those prior studies (or at a minimum cause them to be re-examined or called into question). The authors did a very good job showing how new data and studies refutes the old standard models. Although one could stop there (it would be enough to bring the old models into question), I thought it was fairly obvious that they were also putting forward a new thinking (although not 100% needed) (if I found one case that broke E=MC2, that would be book-worthy enough). The new data basically stands the old standard model on its head, using new data, science, and associated prediction models.
I think with this book, the key finding is about how wrong the current models are shown to be. The authors are opening people's eyes to the fact that new data brings the standard models into question (and overwhelmingly so). The fact that they don't try to make the same mistake-of-hubris as the standard model and prior speculators (as if they might similarly "know" the answer to how things exactly evolved), did not bother me.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

I really appreciated the depth and breath of this biography. It really put the times that AH lived in into perspective. In many ways the times are similar to our own which is instructive.

Alex becomes the author's greatest teacher. Love is stronger than fear. Everyone has gifts. Not what I expected
Revisado: 10-14-20
The book looked to have potential - but it didn't hold up. I kept waiting for the information to flow: What's it like to be a parent, grandparent, etc. of a child with Down Syndrome? The answers never really materialized. Also Alex, the child in this book, was far from typical and had a number of additional challenges beyond Down Syndrome - this was not well explained in the book's description but Alex was not able to walk, talk, etc. normally, (even past age 9) and needed a lot of additional care that would not be typical.
The experience of the family was challenged but overall still positive, and that was clearly expressed.
If you are looking for a story at corrects some misconceptions about how a child with Trisomy 21 effects a family, this story might be helpful. Not so much if you want specifics or details.

We live in the age of the algorithm. Increasingly, the decisions that affect our lives—where we go to school, whether we can get a job or a loan, how much we pay for health insurance—are being made not by humans, but by machines. In theory, this should lead to greater fairness: Everyone is judged according to the same rules.

Historia
Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

This might be the most important book I have read. If I'm going to live longer, avoid cancers, Alzheimer's, etc. It seems prudent that I stop eating sugar. Not easy. Not guaranteed. But so much better than any likely alternative idea for extending a healthy life.

Historia
What makes good people do bad things? How can moral people be seduced to act immorally? Where is the line separating good from evil, and who is in danger of crossing it? Social psychologist Philip Zimbardo has the answers. He explains how - and the myriad reasons why - we are all susceptible to the lure of "the dark side". Drawing on examples from history as well as his own trailblazing research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can make monsters out of decent men and women.
