Love Holly!
Revisado: 12-12-23
Holly Gibney is such a wonderful character. So glad that King brought her back. The story is well told, with nice surprises. I very much enjoyed the excellent narration, as well.

Good, not great, but kept me entertained
Revisado: 07-29-22
l liked it, but did not love it. The only Character who seemed more than halfway developed was Travis. A few too many coincidences, a few too many implausible plot threads, and a ridiculous ending. However, there was enough there to keep me listening to the end. Narrarator was just ok.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

If ever a book needed a ruthless editor...
Revisado: 12-22-20
...it's The Goldfinch. At half the pages, it would've been twice the story. Donna Tartt knows a lot of words and she displays them here to wretched excess. There are moments of pure gold, to be sure, but you've got to pan through acres and endless acres of words to find them.

Historia
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

Extraordinary
Revisado: 08-04-20
I've long loved this story, seen both versions of the movie, but this is the first time it's ever been read to me. So powerful in its simplicity, so elegant in character developmen, so true in voice...I was blown away and hated for it to end. This is an Audible for all ages, and I give it my highest recommendation.

Ending stinks
Revisado: 07-02-20
Enjoyed this right up till the last 30 seconds. Implausible premise, but I liked the protagonist enough to buy in. The ending, though, was wrong enough to spoil everything else about it. The narrator did an excellent job.

Historia
Marissa Dahl, a shy but successful film editor, travels to a small island off the coast of Delaware to work with the legendary - and legendarily demanding - director Tony Rees on a feature film with a familiar logline: Some girl dies. It's not much to go on, but the specifics don't concern Marissa. Whatever the script is, her job is the same. She'll spend her days in the editing room, doing what she does best: Turning pictures into stories. But she soon discovers that on this set, nothing is as it's supposed to be - or as it seems.

I enjoyed it all - story, characters, and especially the narrator. So much so that I just purchased another book written by the author AND one narrated by Ms. Whelan.

Historia
For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 06-22-20
The only thing I knew about this book going in was that is a darling. EVERYONE loves it. I didn't, although I really wanted to. I found it repetitive and predictable, although enjoyable enough to listen all the way through. I've certainly listened to worse! And although I know she is quite popular, part of my lack of enthusiasm is due to Ms. Campbell's narration. Deadpan delivery, with all of the male voices alike.
