I gave this a try after finding it available in the Plus catalog, and would have been dissatisfied had I purchased it.. I stopped listening at Chapter 8. Not to be unkind, but presumably this is a first novel--it certainly reads like one, at least, right from the start, which is why I was unwilling to invest time into it until the end.

Audible should do everyone a favor and label this as a Young Adult work--I might have enjoyed it at 16, but not at 60.

Narrator: please check your pronunciation of Rigel--I've never heard it pronounced that way.

Even having lived through those times, I found this enjoyable book about the Apollo 8 mission still enhanced my appreciation for both the significance of this journey as well as the considerable risks involved. Well worth the credit for any fan of space exploration (and twice as worth it in the 2:1 credit sale where I found it), and I always appreciate Ray Porter as a fine narrator.

One pedantic point: I see one reviewer is critical of the narrator's pronunciation of Gemini, insisting it should be gem-en-eye and not gem-en-ee. That is incorrect. While both pronunciations are acceptable (check your dictionary), because the U.S. space program was conducted mostly in the American South, the Gemini Program adopted the southern pronunciation, which is indeed gem-en-ee. Go to YouTube and listen to any recordings made during that era, and you'll hear it consistently pronounced that way. Indeed, I've heard Michael Collins (Command Module pilot of Apollo 11) pronounce the word both ways literally within the same sentence, referring in one case to the constellation (gem-en-eye), and in the other to the space program (gem-en-ee). It's an understandable mistake--I've even heard young astronauts make it--but anyone sufficiently familiar with the early history of space flight knows it is properly pronounced gem-en-ee.

Interesting study of multiple personality syndrome, but Audible really, really, really needs to tag this extremely dark material for repeated elements of brutal rape, physical and emotional child and spousal abuse, and some racism. Definitely not YA material.

I found this to be a good introduction to a fascinating topic. And while past reviewers rightly complained about their lack, there are chapter titles now (Apr 2022).

That said, the content is suspiciously short--obviously the author has something to hide. Someone should really look into this.
