I love this whole series. It’s vibrant and full of rich emotional texture. The motivation of each character comes across in each word.

For this story, though, if the question “What do you see?” and all of its variations were removed, this book would be a full two hours shorter. So listen to this book only when you have patience for the characters in your emotional rank.

And, there is a fair amount of repetition of info in the series , like mentioning EVERY TIME Grethan is mentioned, the whole story of how he’s ‘deaf’ is explained-every time.

Overall, the story is good enough to push through these issues.

I thought the main character was supposed to be a strong woman, and it started that way thenfirst 5 minutes of the
Book. However, she’s constantly acting like an insipid twit. Not enough time was spent establishing her as an actual strong character before she turned into a self-indulged teenager. And, yes I know this is a fictional book, but as a healthcare worker, this book irritates the stuffing out of me.
A) She can’t pull herself together long enough to even pretend to be a half-way decent doctor in the hospital setting.
B) The HIPAA violation is repugnant to me.

This book has a good story but I really wish the framework in which it is told would support some of the assumptions the author asks us to believe. Because it doesn’t, it voids the credibility of this story.

Disclaimer: I’m only half way through the book so I’m going to update this when I’m done.

The story has a lot of potential, but the narrator might have made me hate the heroine. Why is she so whiny and self-centered? I don't know if that was a literary decision by the author, or if it was the narrator. But I totally wasted my credit. 😣 I had such high hopes for this book too. It was the first time in a while I was jonesing to read/listen to it. Looks like I'll be reading the next and pray it isn't as bad

It takes an incredibly skilled writer to draw the reader into a world so much so that the reader forgets what they are doing and becomes completely immersed the story. Michelle Sagara achieves that in the rich, intense book and the overall series. I have become so emotionally invested that I can't put it down.

That said, the way the heroine is written drives me crazy, to the point where I am swearing at the protagonist. She can't really be as obtuse as the author makes her out to be, she just can't. She's too intuitive, too compassionate, too clever and perceptive to be that "dumb". But the way she's expounds and seemingly rambles on and eventually gets to the point 20 minutes (sometimes literally 20 min) later is less impactful and more frustrating than I think the author intended. What I think is meant to provide insight into the protagonist ends up making the book top-heavy, bloated and redundant in some instances. And that alone infuriates me. Because this had the potential to be that much better, and it's already so, so good.

I love this storyline, the characters are enchanting and real. I enjoy how descriptive and rich the writing is. And because I am so emotionally invested in this protagonist, it drives me crazy that the author deliberately presents her as an imbecile at times, one who doesn't show growth as a way to enhanced the story even more. Instead of getting on with the story and furthering it, the protagonist will quibble over semantics with other characters and it drags the book out longer than it should. I don't know if there quibbling (different from the enjoyable banter if this book) your meant to be a plot device. If so, it fails miserably.

Rarely do I leave such detailed reviews, but when I do, it is only because there author has created a world in which I now reside. I am now irrevocably changed and bettered for having read/heard this story. I hope in torn my small observations might help in some way, any future writing.

Thank you for sharing this world and these characters and this story. 😊

Can I please get a heroine who isn't written as too stubborn to grow or a whiny, sniveling, helpless maiden? Jillian has a mix of both, to the point where I had to stop the book several times just to calm down because her manner irritated me so. SMH

Kat just doesn't show enough development. She is considerably paralyzed, traumatized, unable to think...I wanted to see her group beyond that fear, push past it and start showing some metal. it became a point of frustration for me.

seriously it killed me to finish this book. the only thing that kills me more is not finishing a book. kara refuses to bend and communicate, and she showed no growth as a character. her pride and helplessness have thrown the women's lib movement back into the dark ages. I just wanted to shake some sense into her the entire time.... normally this author is so much better than this. and the narration felt like a narration. I couldn't get lost in the story because it felt too much like they were reading out loud rather than portraying a character. it just didn't work for me.
