Sacrifice, patriotism and bravery
Revisado: 03-09-24
Frankie McGrath is a woman for the ages. She loved her family and endured loss, healing and finding her path.
So little attention is paid to the heroes of Vietnam. The world turned its back on those who sacrificed the most and peaceful protestors wrongly directed their anger towards the veterans.
Women served tirelessly as nurses and doctors and their service was not acknowledged. That they weren’t considered vets is heartbreaking.
War is terrible, and we owe so much to those who serve.

Historia
Opal is a lot of things—orphan, high school dropout, full-time cynic and part-time cashier—but above all, she's a determined to find a better life for her younger brother Jasper. One that gets them out of Eden, Kentucky, a town remarkable for only two things: bad luck and E. Starling, the reclusive nineteenth century author of The Underland, who disappeared over a hundred years ago. All she left behind were dark rumors—and her home. Everyone agrees that it’s best to ignore the uncanny mansion and its misanthropic heir, Arthur. Almost everyone, anyway.

Little too much time devoted to throbbing wound
Revisado: 07-17-23
I am a huge fan of Ruth Ware books with Imogen church as narrator. This story was suspenseful and enjoyable; perhaps, a little less description of Jac’s throbbing wound would have been appropriate. Less is more.

Historia
A great American artist, John Singer Sargent is an abiding enigma. He scandalized viewers with the frankness and sensuality of his work, while dressing like a businessman and crafting a highly respectable persona. In The Grand Affair, scholar Paul Fisher explores the enigmas of fin de siecle sexuality and art, fashioning a biography that grants the man and his paintings new and intense life.

John Singer Sargeant’s life is a tapestry
Revisado: 04-19-23
A brilliant artist who broke barriers in his portrayal of women and whose family and their travels made him bring to life natural landscapes such as the alps and modern cities. While known for his portraits, his legacy is both artistic and social commentary. This book is an incredible compendium of his artistic influences and the indelible mark left by his models on both the artist and society.

The challenges of being a woman in the 1920s and the 1970s are similar. The seamless weaving of the stories of Clara and Virginia is an artistic tapestry of overcoming challenges and being true to oneself. A fabulous mystery with thoughtfully developed and relatable heroines.

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Moving and authentic
Revisado: 01-09-23
This book is a compelling call to accept others and their differences. To me, the richness of a tapestry is based on the differences of the colors and of the patterns. While readers appreciate art in its many form, they don’t as easily accept or celebrate the differences of others. Life is hard and this book shows how very challenging it can be.
