Disappointed
Revisado: 05-10-24
I ordered this based on the NYT Book Review podcast, where both of the reviewers gave it rave reviews. However, I found it tiresome and not even very funny. I did stick with it for about 3/4 of the book. And finally admitted defeat.

I wanted to like it, but....
Revisado: 10-01-23
Robert Gottlieb gave this book such high marks in his memoir Avid Reader; so I downloaded it. I listened for about an hour and then returned it for a refund. Perhaps the print version is worthy of the praise, but I found the narrator annoying. She tried, (perhaps too hard??) to give voice to the individual characters, but her efforts didn't work for me.

A reminder that everyone just wants to be heard
Revisado: 05-11-23
This was a moving story and should be a required read/listen to anyone considering nursing home care for their loved ones. Just because they are older or less active, they remain human beings, who want to be respected, and. listened to.

Meh
Revisado: 01-03-23
A murder. Questions abound. Subplots including sibling rivalry, a possible affair and mysterious business dealings. Several bombshells at the end … at least one of which was apparent early on. All according to the playbook. Thus, my review in a nutshell: Nothing special.

Ten months after her mother’s death, the narrator of The Hero of This Book takes a trip to London. The city was a favorite of her mother’s, and as the narrator wanders the streets, she finds herself reflecting on her mother’s life and their relationship. Thoughts of the past meld with questions of the future: Back in New England, the family home is now up for sale, its considerable contents already winnowed.

Sorry. I gave it a fair shot, but after 25%, I threw in the towel. I assume something happened later in the book, but I wasn’t intrigued enough to find out.

Historia
Perceptive, funny, and nostalgic, E. B. White's stroll around Manhattan remains the quintessential love letter to the city, written by one of America's foremost literary figures. The New York Times named Here Is New York one of the 10 best books ever written about the metropolis, and The New Yorker called it "the wittiest essay, and one of the most perceptive, ever done on the city".

Historia
Edith Wharton stands among the finest writers of early 20th-century America. In The Custom of the Country, Wharton’s scathing social commentary is on full display through the beautiful and manipulative Undine Spragg. When Undine convinces her nouveau riche parents to move to New York, she quickly injects herself into high society. But even a well-to-do husband isn’t enough for Undine, whose overwhelming lust for wealth proves to be her undoing.

Is there a more unlikable character in literature?
Revisado: 09-10-22
Scarlett O’Hara at least loved Tara and Ashley Wilkes. But Undine Spragg has no redeeming qualities! That said, I listened to all 15+ hours because Edith Wharton is a master story teller whose insights and observations of social behaviors is unmatched.

A good swimming pool book. Nothing more
Revisado: 06-28-22
It reminded me of a Nicholas Sparks book - maybe an unfair stereotype since the only Sparks book I have ever read was The Notebook, and that was years and years ago. At any rate, it was a cheesy plot that was totally predictable. Sorry I wasted an Audible credit. The narration was good, but the occasional musical accompaniments were totally unnecessary and annoying.

Historia
Nell Young’s whole life and greatest passion is cartography. Her father, Dr. Daniel Young, is a legend in the field, and Nell’s personal hero. But she hasn't seen or spoken to him ever since he cruelly fired her and destroyed her reputation after an argument over a cheap old gas station highway map. But when Dr. Young is found dead in his office at the New York Public Library, with the very same seemingly worthless map hidden in his desk, Nell can’t resist investigating. To her surprise, she soon discovers that the map is incredibly valuable, and also exceedingly rare.

Revisado: 05-19-22
I am not a fan of magical realism or time travel or imaginary worlds. So I didn’t care for this. However it was recommended by someone much younger than I, and that generation may find it a winner. I think it was a Book of the Month club selection.
