Drawn from historical records and current news headlines, A Taste for Poison weaves together the tales of spurned lovers, shady scientists, medical professionals, and political assassins to show how the precise systems of the body can be impaired to lethal effect through the use of poison. From the deadly origins of the gin and tonic cocktail to the arsenic-laced wallpaper in Napoleon’s bedroom, A Taste for Poison leads listeners on a fascinating tour of the intricate, complex systems that keep us alive - or don’t.

The narrator is British which lends gravitas to the subject. I know it’s a prejudice, but it works. The book is well researched. Explanations of how the poisons affect the body are clear to a lay person. Interesting!

Historia
In 1941, the US began to form a hand-picked army to fight in Europe. What made it different is that its troops were composed of artists, actors, meteorologists, and sound technicians, and their true mission was not to fight, but to deceive the German Army. Information about the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops was classified top secret until 1996. Following the declassification, Jack Kneece interviewed many of the key personnel involved in this elaborate ruse, including fashion designer Bill Blass.

Amazing story, details made it come to life.
Revisado: 03-24-24
Firsthand accounts interested me most, danger balanced with humor & pranks. Recruitment efforts were interesting, too. A bit redundant in parts. I should have kept a WWII map of Europe nearby to understand the geography involved.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Lots of historical detail

Loved the narration; deep resonant voice added gravitas. Following so many characters through the long story challenged me— a map would have been good to start with. This slice of history put larger events into a context that helped me understand historical global conflicts.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Romance disguised as mystery
Revisado: 07-19-23
Story was moderately interesting but the overblown writing was cringeworthy. An editor would have struck out 1/2 the adjectives & adverbs. An editor would have noted that some lines were used several times. An editor would have asked Can You Find Another Word For Gasp? The story line has good ideas though.

Historia
Everyone in my family has killed someone. Some of us, the high achievers, have killed more than once. I’m not trying to be dramatic, but it is the truth. Some of us are good, others are bad, and some just unfortunate. I’m Ernest Cunningham. Call me Ern or Ernie. I wish I’d killed whoever decided our family reunion should be at a ski resort, but it’s a little more complicated than that.

Is it bad to enjoy murder? This book is not about enjoying murder but I feel kinda guilty laughing so much through a murder story. A great listen!

Romance dressed in trench coat
Revisado: 05-16-23
The 1st book is poorly written & narration is breathlessly dramatic. Each book improves both in story & performance. An editor could strengthen grammar, inconsistencies & wandering story lines. Still, it kept me entertained for several days.

Don’t listen while driving
Revisado: 07-09-22
Good story & mostly good production, but background sirens & ringing phones disturbed me while I drove my car. Sound effects were so realistic that I looked for emergency vehicles on the road. Kept wondering, Is that my phone ringing? Good story, performed well. But nerve rattling while driving.

The book is huge so I thought listening to it might be easier than reading it. By chapter 5 I was lost. Good fantasy writing. But I think slow reading, maps, etc, might be better media for this story.
