I am not a historian, but in my younger years, I certainly heard some of the historical propositions about Jefferson that Mr. Barton refutes in this book. In particular, I remember watching an episode of the 80's TV sitcom Head of the Class where Robyn Given's character finds out she is supposed to be an African-American descendant of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. Her classmates think it's "cool" to have such a pedigree, but she expresses that such an ancestry invokes a sense of personal violation and exploitation as an African-American woman. Thus her white classmates learn the lesson that their view of the history of the United States is not complete nor sensitive to true corrupt and abusive nature of our Founding Fathers. Rather, Thomas Jefferson is a BAD MAN that raped helpless slaves while at the same time writing that all men are created equal. Such hypocrisy! In the related chapter, Mr. Barton effectively refutes the notion that T. Jefferson was father to any of Heming's children using several lines of evidence and notes that such rumors were started by a man who despised Jefferson and tried to smear him in the early American press with such accusations for political retribution.

Barton takes on a number of these standard contemporary imputations of Jefferson' and does a solid job, with plenty of sources and evidence, and his arguments are well constructed and researched. Given the nature of leftist academics in this country, I would say that Barton's arguments are worth hearing, because you are never going to hear this from Academia, Hollywood, or PBS documentaries, as they are all of the view that Jefferson must be seen a BAD MAN who helped to create a BAD COUNTRY.

Nice job. Interesting book, well narrated and well-worth the read.

BRONSON PINCHOT WAS AMAZING AS A NARRATOR AND BROUGHT THE STORIES ALIVE. AND THE OTHER NARRATOR WAS ALSO EXCELLENT. THE STORIES WERE INTERESTING AND BROUGHT SOMETHING NEW TO THE X-FILES CANNON. I WAS ENTERTAINED WITH THIS FORMAT AS THIS WAS THE FIRST FICTIONAL WORK I HAVE LISTENED TO ON AUDIBLE.

I LOVED THE FIRST X-FILE AUDIO-BOOK I PURCHASED WITH BRONSON PINCHOT AND ANOTHER AUTHOR READING EACH STORY INDIVIDUALLY. THE STORIES SEEMED MORE ORIGINAL, ENTERTAINING AND INTERESTING; THE PRESENTATION SEEMED MORE ORGANIZED AND JUST MORE "LISTENABLE". I WAS A DEVOTEE OF THE X-FILES TV SERIES AND MOVIE AND KNOW ALL ABOUT CSM AND KRYCEK AND REALLY LOOKED FORWARD TO THE ORIGINAL CAST NARRATING THIS BOOK THEMSELVES, BUT DISAPPOINTINGLY I FOUND THAT THIS FORMAT WAS NOT AS INTERESTING OR COHERENT. THE ACTORS VOICES AND AUDIO EDITING WAS FIRST CLASS, BUT AS AN X-FILES TV SHOW FAN FOR YEARS, THESE STORIES THEMSELVES SEEMED VERY FORMULAIC REHASHES OF THE PREMISE OF THE OLD SHOW, WITHOUT ANYTHING TERRIBLY INTERESTING OR ORIGINAL IN THE STORY-LINES. PLUS AT TIMES I FOUND THE DIALOGUE HARDER TO FOLLOW THAN WITH ONE NARRATOR. OVERALL, THESE STORIES WERE NOTHING SPECIAL, AND MIGHT ACTUALLY BE MORE INTERESTING TO PEOPLE WHO DID NOT SPEND YEARS WATCHING AND RE-WATCHING THE TV EPISODES AND NEVER LEARNED OF THE WHOLE X-FILES MYTHOLOGY.

This book was an interesting and enjoyable read dealing with the idea that there is a biological and evolutionary basis to "The masculine" as a real and acknowledged facet of what it means to be a human male. The author goes into the characteristics of what it means to "be a man". The author discusses the implications of these characteristics and how the fulfillment or the sublimation or suppression of these manly characteristics can have an effect on the individual and society. The author's perspective is unique for a lay reader like myself, and politically incorrect. There is no reliance on archaeological nor social science data to back up his claims, though there are some literary/cultural examples given, and I would call it a book-length essay on the subject. Overall it is well-written and the narration by the author is excellent and adds to the enjoyment of listening to the book. I have listened to the book only once and mostly in the car and this review is based on that type of listening experience.

The bottom line is that network news is influenced by corporate money and political power. Great story and nice presentation by the narrator.

Well written and read by the author. Hitchens is certainly one of the most gifted writers of recent times and it turns out that he is also an excellent narrator. I am not a fan of autobiography however being a fan of Hitchens I found his book to be as engaging and entertaining as any work of fiction.

Greatest Narration on Audible

Attention Audible: this is the way books need to be narrated. Alan Sklar is the best narrator I have heard. In all the right places, he uses his voice to deliver jubilation, disbelief, snark, dryness, wit, sarcasm, outrage, excitement, somberness, and on and on, bringing the written word to life! This is what every narrator should do, as appropriate to the tone of the text, of course.

I now have about 200 audible books, I have listened to this one 4 times already because I just enjoy the narration, it's actually entertaining in and of itself, and just pulls you through the whole book before you know it.

As far as the content of the book and the author, anyone who knows Bernard Goldberg knows he is conservative who worked in the liberal news rooms for decades and is well accustomed to the left-wing bias. He left the news side and since has written a couple books, and does conservative media analysis. He is smart, funny, and most importantly a seasoned journalist who knows how to do research, so....
....the chapters are organized in thought and content, making the case, USING EVIDENCE FROM THE PRESS, that the main stream media vacated their roll in vetting and challenging Barack Obama in his 2008 BECAUSE THEY WANTED HIM TO WIN.

Goldberg makes the case that the 2008 election was the first time the American liberal news media en masse actually moved from a position of passive bias favoring one candidate over the other, to actively downplaying negative stories of one candidate and then attacking the candidates critics ... remember the national news media investigating and then reporting on the credentials of Joe the plumber, a private citizen who asked Obama a tough question at one of the debates ?

I highly recommend everyone interested in politics read this book because the way most Americans get their political and world news is from the main stream press, and they are subject to shockingly deep bias and not above manipulating the stories to the betterment of their own world view and desires. It really is a shame. They are supposed to be "Objective".

Very interesting biography

I am not a fan of biographies generally, but I have listened to Medved on the radio and he is an interesting and knowledgeable story teller, so I figured, 'what the heck'. I listened over a week or two and it was a witty and enjoyable listen from a guy with a unique story to tell.

I gave it 4/5 stars overall because like I said, I'm not the biggest fan of biographies, they aren't going to really change your life, but Medved, as a professional broadcaster, did a lively job narrating the book.

The book as I recall talks about his politics only as it applies to his bio, but is not a preachy political book, so liberals or conservatives who like contemporary biographies would like it and not be put off.

Steyn's reading makes this a 5 star audiobook

For those who don't know, Mark Steyn is a conservative commentator, columnist and humorist orignially from Canada. He has a great British accent and thank God he narrated this book. He has a wonderful lively delivery that makes the reading come alive: information and grave commentary are read seriously, and humorous or sardonic commentary are read with the appropriate tongue-in-cheek. He has to be one of the wittiest men to walk the planet. He is like a conservative version of John Stewart, but with alot more insight and facts to back up his targeting of the particular PC sacred cows that he skewers.

I would call this a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining book if the subject wasn't the prediction of the catastrophic end of America and the birth of a post-American world where looney dictators with nukes and totalitarian communist regimes are going to have far more influence on international politics than the bankrupt and impotent US and the rest of rest of the civilized Western world.

It's not all hopeless for Steyn though, for if enough of us can tap into that ruggedly individualist, subversive American spirit now we just might be able to breath new life into this radical experient in self-government as the rest of the Western welfare states sink below the waterline. If your under 40 don't forget, you're the one getting stuck with this collossal big-government nanny-state bar tab, so you might as well forget about retirement, you got five lifetimes of Chinese debt to pay back!

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in politics and enjoys excellent political humor. No one other than looney dictators and big-government technocrats will be offended, and no animals were harmed in the making of this audiobook. Get it!

First, Johnny Heller has to be my favorite Audible narrators... a great gravely voice and an engaging reading. So the book has that going for it right out of the gate. Mamet's writing is smooth and flows like a stream of consciousness in essay after essay. His sentences are constructed informally, or conversationally, yet always with erudition. You get the sense that this is writer who lives what he speaks. Thomas Sowell's prose is in the same category of delivering dense nuggets of wisdom while crafting a clever and quotable sentence. I would love to say this book holds something for everyone, but I don't know whether liberals will read this book. I would hope they do, this book presents truth and wisdom and life experience wrapped in expert prose, it is a joy to listen to. But I don't think liberals like to challenge their innate sense of moral superiority by opening up their philosophy and egos to criticism, no matter how savory. We conservatives are fortunate to be living in a time when great thinkers and wordsmiths are now fleshing out the philosophy of our movement, recapturing and retooling the old wisdom of our great culture, and to be able to hear all these ideas brought to life in well-crafted works both written and spoken. This book is a notable milestone on the road to rediscovery of our American identity, who we are and what we envision for our future and our children's future. I dare say it is the "Common Sense" of our generation. In this battle of visions for America's future they have Krugman, we have Sowell; they have Maddow, Olberman and Sharpton, and we have Prager, Bennett, and Medved. They have most of Hollywood and we now have Mamet.. I'll take those odds all day long.
