Historia
There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World.

A masterful myth
Revisado: 05-01-25
This story is one of the few structured narratives without commentary among the extended middle earth reading. It is a marvelously written tragedy that touches on various people and places in Beleriand in the first age and sets up for “The Fall of Gondolin” well. This book feels like an excellent stepping stone from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy into the Silmarillion as the language and the tone of the writing are somewhat higher than LoTR.

The narrator is new, but also amazing.
Revisado: 08-06-23
I have no idea why there are rude reviews about the narrator. I definitely don’t like how jarring it is when the narrator changes in the middle of a series, but she did incredible. Once you get used to the new voice, you don’t even remember the old one. I thought she was wonderful, and her performances for all of the characters were flawless.

Story is AMAZING, Narrator is not
Revisado: 02-24-22
If you can get through the abysmal performances in the first 3 books until you get to the better narrators, you won’t regret it. The stories are amazing. But this narrator is just.. so bad. Normally I’m not this outward with reviews, but I couldn’t believe how bad it was. Kristine Hvamm is awful, but Emily Shaffer is incredible. Follow up with Bloodlines.
Dimitri: he has a Russian accent. His accent completely disappeared in this book.
Janine: she has a SCOTTISH accent. For some reason, this author decided to attempt a single accent in the whole book, and it was Janine’s. And she used a terrible, shaky British accent.
Mia: her name is pronounce MEE-uh. Not MY-uh. I didn’t know someone could butcher a simple name so badly. And she even said it correctly once or twice in the narration.
Pronunciation:
Moroi: Mo-ROI.
Strigoi: Stri-GOI.
Dhampir: Dom-Peer.
And just so many more.
The voices aren’t as terrible as the first book, but still pretty bad. I’m not really sure why people think that all rude boys have a nasally, childish voice, but apparently this narrator does. There were also several moments with awkward pauses and just general bad performance.
Please learn how to do accents if you are going to attempt them. And for God’s sake, learn pronunciation before you narrate a book.

For the past five years, Bitterblue has reigned as queen of Monsea, heroically rebuilding her nation after her father's horrific rule. After learning about the land of Torla in the east, she sends envoys to the closest nation there: Winterkeep - a place where telepathic foxes bond with humans and people fly across the sky in wondrous airships. But when the envoys never return, having drowned under suspicious circumstances, Bitterblue sets off for Winterkeep herself, along with her spy Hava and her trusted colleague Giddon. On the way, tragedy strikes again.

Absolute Masterpiece
Revisado: 06-10-21
I’m really not sure what the negative reviews were all about when the book first released. This is an absolute masterpiece like every other book in the series. So fantastic, and extremely fun to see the bouncing between characters in the partial 3rd person omniscient. 1000% worth the wait and worth every penny. I’m always hungry for more of her art.
And of course, special nod to Xanthe Elbrick who never disappoints. Incredible as usual. Perfect choice.

Incredible, incredible, INCREDIBLE.
Revisado: 04-12-21
As usual, Richelle has blown me away with her ingenious ability to build the most beautiful stories that both excite and entrap the reader. These books are a far step away from the fantasy fiction of magic and mythic, but hold a glorious magic of their own as we go along the same journey with 3 different girls we come to love. I’ve consumed EVERYTHING that Richelle has written and have never been disappointed, and will continue to do so in the years to come.

Soul Wrenching
Revisado: 06-25-20
This is, without a doubt, one of the most soul wrenchingly amazing books I have ever read. This series got better with every book until an emotional climate. I have loved every single Richelle Mead series I've read over the years, and of course the ones I have binged in the past year, but this one ripped my heart out before putting it back together. I've never been so crippled by the pain of a character and felt so much joy at each and every victory. Not entering this series is a tragic loss for you that you won't even know to regret to its fullest.
