Sixteen years old and enslaved since she was born, Junie has spent her life on Bellereine Plantation in Alabama, cooking and cleaning alongside her family, and tending to the white master’s daughter, Violet. Her daydreams are filled with poetry and faraway worlds, while she spends her nights secretly roaming through the forest, consumed with grief over the sudden death of her older sister, Minnie. When wealthy guests arrive from New Orleans, hinting at marriage for Violet and upending Junie’s life, she commits a desperate act.

Frustrating Read
Revisado: 07-07-25
Reading Junie was a frustrating experience. The characters, especially Junie herself, were incredibly impulsive, and that made the story feel all over the place. The plot kept circling around the same situations instead of moving forward. Honestly, the entire book could have been much shorter if Junie had just used some basic common sense.
The author’s note mentioned wanting to move away from traditional narratives about enslaved people and instead show a character with dreams, love, and flaws. That idea sounded promising, but the execution just didn’t follow through. While Junie had emotions and personal struggles, the way they were presented felt flat and lackluster. I didn’t walk away feeling like I knew her any better than when I started.
There was potential for something deeper, something that challenged the usual stories we’re told. But instead, I got a repetitive storyline with a frustrating main character who kept making the same choices over and over. By the end, I was just ready for it to be over.

The Tension
Revisado: 10-13-24
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas is a dark, atmospheric gem, where every shadow breathes and every whisper lingers. Set in post-revolutionary Mexico, it tells of Beatriz, whose new home pulses with unspeakable terror. The hacienda is alive, its secrets seeping through the walls, trapping her in a chilling dance between survival and madness. Cañas weaves suspense with historical depth, crafting characters that feel both haunted and haunting. Richly gothic, this novel grips like a cold hand, leaving its imprint long after you’ve turned the final page.

This vs. That
Revisado: 10-13-24
The Hacienda by Isabel Cañas wraps its readers in a world where dread and beauty coexist, with characters as haunting as the setting itself. The story’s richness lies in its atmosphere, and Beatriz feels alive in her fear, her fight. In contrast, Mexican Gothic promises shadows but only grazes their surface, with characters that blur and a tension that never quite grips. The Hacienda digs deeper, its horrors lingering long after the final page, while Mexican Gothic feels more fleeting, its impact fading too quickly.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia dances with the echoes of classic horror, most notably the allusion to The Yellow Wallpaper, where madness creeps beneath the surface of a crumbling estate, its walls imprisoning more than just its protagonist. The gothic mansion, like the floorboards in Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart, conceals horrors that pulse beneath the characters’ feet, waiting to be unearthed. At the heart of it all, the snake slithers through the narrative—an unmistakable symbol of temptation and sin, threading biblical undertones into a story of decay and dark inheritance.
Moreno-Garcia builds tension through layers of history and family secrets, though at times the narrative’s twists feel less tight than its inspirations. Still, the novel captures a surreal, unsettling atmosphere where guilt, repression, and serpentine danger coil around every turn. It’s a tale that whispers of old horrors in new skins, weaving familiar archetypes into something strange and compelling.

Historia
More than a decade ago, Mira fled her small, segregated hometown in the south to forget. With every mile she traveled, she distanced herself from her past: from her best friend Celine, mocked by their town as the only white girl with black friends; from her old neighborhood; from the eerie Woodsman plantation rumored to be haunted by the spirits of slaves; from the terrifying memory of a ghost she saw that terrible day when a dare-gone-wrong almost got Jesse—the boy she secretly loved—arrested for murder. But now Mira is back to attend Celine's wedding at the plantation.

Lackluster
Revisado: 10-09-24
When the Reckoning Comes held such promise—its premise rich with tension and history—but as the story unfolded, it never quite delivered the impact I was waiting for. The atmosphere felt right, but the plot moved too cautiously, never building to the climactic reckoning I had hoped for. Instead, it left me feeling underwhelmed, as if all the potential for something powerful fizzled out before it could truly ignite. In the end, it wasn’t a bad read, but it left me searching for something more, something that never fully materialized.

Historia
Alejandra no longer knows who she is. To her husband, she is a wife, and to her children, a mother. To her own adoptive mother, she is a daughter. But they cannot see who Alejandra has become: a woman struggling with a darkness that threatens to consume her. Nor can they see what Alejandra sees. In times of despair, a ghostly vision appears to her, the apparition of a crying woman in a ragged white gown.

Womanhood
Revisado: 10-09-24
The Haunting of Alejandra unfolded with a quiet intensity, one that didn’t rely on fear of the supernatural, but instead on the haunting battles of womanhood and identity. The characters were layered, their struggles real and deeply empathetic, reminding me of the silent wars many women face within themselves. While the book wasn’t frightening in the traditional sense, it brought to light the demons we carry inside—the kind that linger beneath the surface. I liked this book for its emotional honesty, more a reflection of the soul than a tale of terror.

On his first night, he's visited by a terrifying creature who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It's no delusion: The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Boredom
Revisado: 10-09-24
I wanted to immerse myself in The Devil in Silver, hoping for a gripping, unsettling journey. But as the pages turned, the story stretched on, never quite delivering the tension it promised. The characters felt predictable, like shadows of others I’ve encountered before, and the plot moved without any real climax, leaving me waiting for something that never arrived. I considered setting it aside, yet the thought of leaving it unfinished—after spending money on it—kept me going, even though the spark never truly caught.

The delivery of the audiobook
Revisado: 07-06-24
The reading of this text doesn’t give the book the life it deserves. I returned the title after the first hour because there were mistakes within the reading, and the reader tried, but the characters felt lifeless. I’ll just read the hardcover version because this wasn’t a good production.
