Historia
“I’m sorry but the answer’s no.” Reluctant author, Anthony Horowitz, has had enough. He tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne that after three books he’s splitting and their deal is over. The truth is that Anthony has other things on his mind. His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the Vaudeville Theater in London’s West End. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night. The play is panned by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Margaret Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing.

Here we go again another incredible book by Anthony. Some readers who are less familiar with his work may not know that he writes plays, tv shows, and books. All of his work is creative and interesting. That fact that he has put himself as a character in these books is amazing. I love this series.

Historia
Autumn, 1917. London is not the city that Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes once bestrode like giants. Terror has come from the sky, and Londoners are scurrying underground in fear. Then a twin tragedy strikes Watson. An old friend, Staff Nurse Jennings, is on a boat-ambulance torpedoed in the Channel with no survivors. And his concert-going companion, Sir Gilbert Hardy, is kidnapped.

Watson shines as a beacon of sanity in horrible times.
Revisado: 06-25-16
Robert Ryan is such a gifted writer and his ability to bring Watson and Sherlock to us in such a unique way is genius. There are floods of books being written now using the wonderful characters of Watson and Holmes. Most are pathetic attempts to sell books that have no relation to the original characters so beautifully conceived by Arthur Conan Doyle. Robert Ryan's book are the exception. His ability to get inside the original characters personalities and present them at a different time and place is amazing. I could listen to his books for hours, oh yes, I have. All of them. Richard Burnip is the perfect narrater. He sounds like Watson. He gives him just the right tone and emotion of a perfect English gentleman of his time. He makes Watson sound like what he is, a really good man. Dealing with terrible people with honesty and integrity. I do wish he and Holmes shared more time together in the books. There is nothing like the two of them working together. I also wish there was a bit less graphic violence. But the rest is perfection. Let's hope Ryan brings us another novel with Watson and Holmes. They should live forever!

The narrator ruined this book for me.
Revisado: 11-17-15
What did you love best about Murder at the Brightwell?
The story was cute and kept moving. It is a lighthearted mystery/romance story.
Would you recommend Murder at the Brightwell to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes I would. Easy story to drive to. It doesn't take a lot of concentration. But the book was fun.
How could the performance have been better?
To be honest the narrator ruined the book for me. I almost stopped listening several times. The cadence of her speech was way off. It was painful to listen to, my mind would reconstruct each sentence after she spoke. Too hard to explain here but the good news is that the next book that follows has a different narrator. I will never buy another book read by her. Too bad really.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, not that gripping. Just. Lighthearted story. Just what I need sometimes when I am multitasking.
Any additional comments?
So glad to see a new narrator was hired for the next book, this one does not do the story justice.

So sorry I took a chance on this book
Revisado: 06-03-14
Would you try another book from Charles Veley and/or Jacob Thompson?
No, not at this time.
Would you ever listen to anything by Charles Veley again?
No.
What didn’t you like about Jacob Thompson’s performance?
I could not understand a word he said. He spoke very fast, I had to set the narration speed to the slowest setting. Even then I could not understand him. He mumbled and his voice for Sherlock was a disgrace to Sherlock Holmes fans.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Last Moriarty?
Stopped listening within ten minutes
Any additional comments?
The writer suffers due to poor narration. This may have been an OK book, I will never know.

Revisado: 03-05-12
What did you love best about The Dressmaker?
The background story of place and time.
What about Susan Duerden???s performance did you like?
Very easy to listen to. Nice narration style.
Who was the most memorable character of The Dressmaker and why?
Tess is the leading character and she was interesting. I also liked her boyfriend that she ends up with at the end of the book. He had a strong character that served him well in the end.
Any additional comments?
This book was a good read, it had a sympathic lead character that you could really care about and lots of diverse people to enrich the story. It had just enough historical accuracy to make the story meaningful and enough fiction to tie it all together. Very entertaining.

The Civil War may be over but a new war has begun, one between the past and the present, tradition and technology. On a former marshy wasteland, the daring Massachusetts Institute of Technology is rising, its mission to harness science for the benefit of all and to open the doors of opportunity to everyone of merit. But in Boston Harbor a fiery cataclysm throws commerce into chaos, as ships’ instruments spin inexplicably out of control. Soon after, another mysterious catastrophe devastates the heart of the city.

I really wanted to like this book but......
Revisado: 03-05-12
Would you listen to The Technologists again? Why?
No I would not read again. But I did recommed it to friends who attend or work at MIT.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Technologists?
I like the story of the first woman student at MIT. The fact that she could not attend classes and was confind to a basement lab was facinating.
Have you listened to any of Stephen Hoye???s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, he is very good
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
way too long for that!
Any additional comments?
I wanted to like this book more than I did. I live in Boston and have many friends that have attended MIT. I felt that this book was written to become a movie. It was a bit too fantasitc and contrived. I did like the historic bits about Boston and Cambridge and respect the research that Matthew Pearl puts into his books. I liked the Poe Shadow bettet than this one. Not a bad read but just a bit too much drama for me.
