Historia
The ancient world has cast a long shadow, influencing our customs and religious beliefs, our laws, and the form of our governments. It has taught us when and how we make war or pursue peace. It has shaped the buildings we live and work in and the art we hang on our walls. It has given us the calendar that organizes our year and has left its mark on the games we play.

Great as a Starting Point
Revisado: 08-20-22
I absolutely enjoyed the information in this audiobook, and narration was great, but I looked at the length of the book, and assumed there would be some extra tidbits of information about the ancient and prehistoric world, and after reading and listening to several, this book has very little new facts for me to get excited about. I did not find a single thing wrong with the book, and if I had picked up this title when I began my ancient civilization quest for knowledge, several years ago, I'd have been blown away, hence the good rating. I would recommestarting starting point, in your personal quest for knowledge about the ancient world! Very good stuff in jerw.

Historia
In 1528, a mission set out from Spain to colonize Florida. But the expedition went horribly wrong: Delayed by a hurricane, knocked off course by a colossal error of navigation, and ultimately doomed by a disastrous decision to separate the men from their ships, the mission quickly became a desperate journey of survival. Of the 300 men who had embarked on the journey, only four survived - three Spaniards and an African slave.

Can't Say Enough Good Things About This Book!
Revisado: 01-22-21
I don't have any advanced college degrees, however, I'm a history fanatic, and I'm always looking for the next non-fiction story, to fill my mind, as I drive, or work, or whatever. I do not enjoy when the author takes too much creative liberty, makes assumptions, or too many embellishments by the author, I like facts, but not in any crazy analytical format...you know, lists and numbers? That stuff can start to sound like the adults speaking on, "Charlie Brown", and I will drift off, or I will need to rewind, repeatedly. Its nice when a book paints a picture, especially when it's about an adventure...so, for me, this book truly delivered!!!
I was definitely engrossed, every single second of the book, and felt for the men's suffering, and for the men when they missed critical opportunities to save their own lives, but simply made the wrong choice...it sort of drew up that passion inside, when you are reading a quality book, or particularly listening to a quality audiobook, it's important that the author and narrators, both, have to have a true talent for storytelling...otherwise, I'm bored...this book did not bore me for a second, as mentioned. I felt pain for the men, frustration, and conversely, joy, and amazement!
Basically, if you're interested in history, especially history around the time of exploration, you'll love this one! It kept me engrossed from SW Virginia, to NY, on the Blue Ridge Parkway...I honestly did not feel so badly about being rerouted, and losing travel time, because of the explorers plight, in the story, LOL!

Fantastic...
Revisado: 01-03-21
Easy to understand, but in depth enough to capture the interest of someone who is a bit of a Native American fanatical. For example, I never knew that it was likely a form of hepatitis that infected the east coast of the US, in the 1600's, I enjoyed the countless tidbits of information like this, and the flow in which the narrator, and of course, the writer, get the facts out, in story form!

Determined to investigate further, Lord John is distracted when the Crown calls for his services. A comrade in arms has been slain, and to complicate matters, the victim may have been a traitor. Now Lord John has not one but two puzzling mysteries to solve.

I Don't Usually Review...
Revisado: 07-20-18
The book itself is awesome, a favorite of mine, if all time, and definitely in the series, but I want to review the narrator...
This narrator kicks butt!!! She does an incredible job with Jamie's voice, and obviously Claire's, too...she just flows very nicely in the entire book. I don't like her American accents, but they aren't awful, just not how I picture Bri sounding at all, way too much emphasis on r's, and a strange old quality...I don't know, maybe I am just being picky! I don't like how many characters who have been in The Colonies forever, have Scotts accents, such as certain slaves, and Josiah Beardsley(I'm pretty sure), but you know what, who's to really say what any of the people sounded like!? It is a work of fiction after all!
All in all, this narrator is incredible, I love her, and I don't think anyone else could ever do justice to the series, on audiobook😃

Lots of skipping in the 1st and 2nd chapter, so far...VERY annoying! I haven't had this problem before, but it's super frustrating!
