I first encountered the Shahnameh through an art history class in which we studied images from the Shah Tahmasp Shahnameh, and I was blown away by the art. A few years later I came across a video of the pop-up book Zahhak the Legend of the Serpent King, which was again one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. I wanted to experience the full story, and was thrilled when I learned of this audiobook. Where the former two books are feasts for the eyes, this is a banquet for the ears. I highly recommend giving it a listen.

This book was lots of fun, very sexy, just not very deep. I enjoyed it, and if you like this sort of story (you get pretty much exactly what's on the box), I'd recommend it for an easy read. I have a few nitpicks which you can read below, but they're honestly pretty minor.

Plot- wise I felt like there was set up for more conflict with her workplace regarding her pseudonym, so the resolution there felt a little bland. Then on the other end of the spectrum, his response to her using her safe word was. . . ugh. I have to take issue with it. I don't buy that he's been "in the scene" for any realistic amount of time if that's how he takes being stopped when his sub is uncomfortable. She was right to call him out about his behavior. However, they moved past it really dang fast. ಠ_ಠ Also, there was no discussion of the importance of aftercare, and what there was felt a bit perfunctory.

Honestly, my biggest issue was with the narration. The narrator has a good voice and for the most part got the emotions spot on, but she over enunciated certain words in a really bizarre manner. I got thrown for a loop every time she said "mercy less" rather than "merciless", and she over emphasized vowels on a number of different words. For example, she pronounced "lethargy" as "lə-THAR-jē" rather than "leth-ər-jē". There were a few other times that made me think she only knows the words from reading them and has never heard someone else say them outloud before.

These are not big problems. These are really just things that annoyed me. If you enjoy this genre, you will probably enjoy this book. If you don't enjoy this genre, I don't know why you're even reading reviews.

I know too much of art history to ever be able to sympathize with a Victorian era British archeologist who removed "fake" antiquities from Egypt. Forgeries or otherwise, I just don't buy it. A quick fix to that scene would be to make her get in trouble with fellow archeologists by exposing their smuggling operations. Then she'd be both credible and sympathetic, and I wouldn't hate the main character within the first couple chapters.

I gave it three stars because maybe it gets better, but after not caring for the first book, I decided not to waste my time on the second. I typically will give an author a couple chances, but I think Michaels needs a few more books under her belt (and better, more diverse beta readers) before I'd consider giving her a second chance.

I enjoy historical romance, but this is a bit too melodramatic for my taste. The narrator is just about the best part of the book. There are better, more subtle ways to raise the stakes and create suspense than to kill people. Matters don't need to be life or death in order to be important, and when there is death, the emotional impact should be weighty. I just didn't feel much of anything for the victims nor the main characters, and it felt like imperiling them was the author's only way of eliciting emotion.

I'd overlook most of the over-the-top drama, but I got turned off, hard, by the casual use of "oriental". Sure it was historically accurate to the time, but there are many other racial slurs from that time that modern authors still manage to avoid using. "Oriental" is on the list of racial slurs you don't use anymore.

This would definitely be categorized as dubcon (dubious consent) on any fanfiction site. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I didn't feel great about enjoying it. There's quite a bit of "not likes other girl-isms" at the beginning, which were unnecessary and came across as both juvenile and misogynistic. Pretty sure this book failed the bechdel test.

The story is a bit melodramatic, the historical accuracy is lax (it seemed like much of the time period research was just reading the genre rather than actually cracking open a history book), and the narrator often missed the emotion of the scene.

The narrator has a nice voice and pleasant accent, she pronounces well and does a fine job of reading male voices without making them a caricature. I just don't think she hit the correct emotional tone throughout. Often wry or humorous passages are read flat, the pacing felt rushed with insufficient pauses at the end of paragraphs, and the overall tone of the non dialogue sections never quite matched the emotional subtext.

All that said, my biggest complaint is that the main character never kneed anyone in the balls. There were multiple opportunities, and multiple characters who deserved it, yet instead she just thumped on people ineffectually with her lady fists. I would have respected her and the author more if she incapacitated at least one asshole with a swift kick to the groin.

The Lady Astronaut books are the best I've read all year, and I've read 103 books in the 136 days since this year started. (That's not including novellas, short stories, webcomics, or fanfic).
