Not half as good as the first book

The first book was a breath of fresh air—thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. This one, though in the same vein, has some major plot holes that somehow slipped past the two writers and, I’m guessing, an editor or two.

The religious angle is still entertaining. I enjoyed it, and it’s a fresh take. It also does a solid job of anchoring the sense of duty for certain characters, which I appreciated.
Some folks have griped about the narration of the female voices and girls’ voices, but that didn’t bother me at all. That said, there’s one character who, every time she speaks, sounds like Edward Norton in Fight Club.

Back to the book—it ran out of steam pretty early. It felt like the plot holes were glossed over because fixing them would’ve required too much reframing to keep the whole thing sturdy, like a square building.

No spoilers here, but the ending left me cold, especially with one of those plot holes rearing its head right at the finish line. That sealed it for me—I probably won’t bother downloading the next one. The first book? Phenomenal, absolutely give it a shot. This second one? Still okay, but the wheels definitely came off the bus.

I listened to this series a long time ago and liked it then. Now, a few years later—having gone through dozens of end-of-the-world apocalypse-type books—I decided to come back to it. This is hands down the best of the genre, and yet it’s not really part of that genre.

This book is more about community and surviving through differences. There are no drawn-out gunfights, no one’s walking around with AR-15s—though I do enjoy those books, and there’s nothing like a day at the range. But this book hits differently. It’s about survival, just in another way.

Well done to the author. I’m not sure if I fully appreciated it the first time I read it, but this gets five stars all the way through. The writing, the story, and the performance are all top-tier.

Cheers.

I listened to the first book because someone recommended it to me, and I have to say, it was pretty solid. A fresh take on the genre, some interesting twists, and I even found myself comparing the main character to a few people I know.

Then came the second book, and… well, let’s just say it didn’t live up to the hype. Honestly, it felt like it could’ve been condensed into a few chapters of the first book. It dragged on forever, and the characters—who started strong—took a nosedive.

(Spoiler alert ahead, so proceed with caution!)

Let’s start with the wife. She’s supposed to be a doctor, but by the end of the book, she’s written like she doesn’t have a single clue about what’s going on. The female characters in general don’t fare much better—they’re painted as naive, petty, and more like props for creating conflict than actual people. At times, it felt like I was watching one of those Taylor Sheridan dramas where everyone’s decisions are just setups for chaos rather than making any sense.

And don’t get me started on the husband. He’s so caught up in being “right” during an argument that he leaves his wife, autistic son, and daughter in harm’s way. Really? No one acts like that. By the halfway point, I was done.

I wanted to love this book, especially after such a promising first installment. But I don’t think I’ll be moving on to book three unless a strong cup of coffee—and maybe a compelling reason—changes my mind.

This book has an interesting storyline and a wide range of characters, but the main character comes across as overly pulpy, with an over-the-top internal monologue, dialogue, and exaggerated actions that everyone around them seems to ignore.

It’s an interesting story but very pulpy. If that’s your thing and you enjoy over-the-top cop stories, have at it!

This series offers an engaging take on apocalyptic survival, though, as with many in the genre, there are moments when characters make choices that seem implausible in real-world chaos. Whether it’s navigating a tsunami, viral outbreak, or societal breakdown, some decisions feel like stretches. However, credit where it’s due—getting all five books in this bundle is a steal!

The character development shines across the series, with arcs that keep you invested from start to finish. As a New Englander, I particularly appreciated the realistic depiction of regional settings, which adds authenticity to the story. Overall, it’s an excellent series—both entertaining and well worth the read.

I picked this series up for one credit, so I can’t say it was money wasted. However, I could barely make it through the fourth book. Sadly, like many other entries in the genre, the characters start strong but progressively get dumber as the series goes on. It feels like they were lifted straight from The Walking Dead, with decisions so nonsensical.
Worse, they throw all caution to the wind even after witnessing the complete collapse of society. At some point, you start thinking that some of them deserve whatever comes their way—not because they’re bad people, but because their choices are just plain idiotic.

I won’t spoil anything or get into the plot details. I’ll just say that while the first book is worth the credit, the series quickly runs out of steam. By the end, you’ll find yourself hoping it wraps up quickly, just so you can move on to something better.

I really enjoyed the first few books of this series. The well-defined characters, entertaining storylines, and realistic settings provided excellent ingredients for compelling reading. However, this latest installment left me disappointed.

Without giving away too many details, our hero somehow manages to infiltrate the inner circle of his nemesis, despite the latter having tried to kill him for the past few years. Astonishingly, even though the hero admits to being a Navy SEAL in another life, his true identity goes undetected by those he has been battling. This lack of believability is unacceptable.

It's a real shame because I couldn't continue. The previous book reached a new level of suspense and was incredibly entertaining, so I was eagerly looking forward to seeing how the characters' storylines would conclude. Unfortunately, this book fell short. Even the movie *Spies Like Us* presented a more believable portrayal of espionage.

The series started strong, and I'm determined to see it through, particularly to follow the arc of one intriguing character. However, this latest installment reveals an uneven quality in the writing. At times, the narrative feels well-paced and thoughtfully constructed, yet it frequently shifts to simplistic and inconsistent prose. The disparity is striking, perhaps due the influence of two different writers.

Without delving into spoilers, there are notable inconsistencies that disrupt the plot's momentum. Despite these flaws, the book isn't entirely without merit, especially if you're picking it up during a half-off sale. Just be prepared for some logical lapses whenever the main character is in focus.

A

The narration of this book is top-tier, drawing listeners in with its engaging and vivid storytelling. The story itself begins with great promise, captivating the audience with its intriguing plot and well-developed characters. However, as the narrative progresses, it seems to lose some of its initial momentum. The latter part of the book feels rushed, as if the author either ran out of pages or intentionally hurried through to set up critical plot points for the next installment in the series.

Despite this, the book remains an enjoyable experience, and I am eager to see where the series heads next. It’s definitely worth a listen for those who appreciate strong narration and a story that, while imperfect, still holds promise for future developments.

Having lingered on my wishlist for some time, "Fearless" finally found its way into my reading queue. Initially, my delay was due to my immersion in various fictional narratives of individuals overcoming adversity. In hindsight, I should have prioritized this remarkable work.

Eric Blehm's "Fearless" is a truly inspiring account of Adam Brown’s journey from rock bottom to the pinnacle of elite military service. The book is not only enlightening but also a powerful reminder of the potential for light to emerge from darkness. While there are numerous books about Navy SEALs that highlight their toughness, "Fearless" uniquely reveals the vulnerability beneath their hardened exteriors.

The narration is exceptional, transporting the reader into the very heart of Arkansas and the life of Adam Brown. Blehm’s meticulous interviews with everyone who knew Brown enrich the narrative, creating a vivid and deeply personal portrait of a man driven by purpose and redemption.

Adam Brown's story is one of unparalleled courage and ultimate sacrifice, lived with unwavering faith and dedication. For those seeking inspiration, "Fearless" is a must-read. It’s a book that might even stir profound personal reflection, as it did for me. As a recovering Catholic, this book has inspired me to reconsider my own spiritual journey.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this book. Its impact is profound and lasting.
