Historia
Garry Hartshorn and Softie Monaghan were never love's young dream. Not even on their wedding day. Softie was sophisticated, a career woman, who owned a nice apartment overlooking St Kilda Beach. Garry had a few rough edges, plus one failed marriage and an assortment of jobs under his belt. But Softie's body clock was ticking, and Garry wanted children....

excellent character development
Revisado: 11-29-21
The characters are revealed incrementally, drawn in richly nuanced detail. The relationship problems are portrayed as realistically subjective, most often the consequences of poor decisions made in response to circumstances that are perceived to be beyond their control (I had no choice). And while it’s not all tied up with a neat bow at the end—because life never is—there’s enough resolution to be satisfying and allow the reader to imagine a hopeful outcome.

Historia
Traveling across millennia, weaving the experiences and world views of cultures both extinct and extant, The Invention of Yesterday shows that the engine of history is not so much heroic (battles won), geographic (farmers thrive), or anthropogenic (humans change the planet) as it is narrative. Many thousands of years ago, when we existed only as countless small autonomous bands of hunter-gatherers widely distributed through the wilderness, we began inventing stories - to organize for survival, to find purpose and meaning, to explain the unfathomable.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 02-04-20
Tamim Ansary writes with deep insight, compassion, and wit. His understanding of the interconnected patterns of humanity is profound—even the topics about which I thought I knew something were given richer meaning by his unputdownable storytelling.

Historia
Felix Castor used to cast out demons for a living, and London was his stomping ground. But in a time when the supernatural realm is in upheaval and spilling over into the mundane world of the living, his skills are in renewed demand. With old debts to pay, Castor is left with no choice but to accept one final, well-paying assignment: a seemingly simple exorcism.

fantastic story, wrong narrator
Revisado: 09-17-15
How could the performance have been better?
Michael Kramer's voice and delivery are wonderful, but he has an uncomfortably, distractingly flawed English accent. He should either have not tried at all (it would have been far less distracting to listen to his normal accent), or should not have taken the gig. Simon Prebbles would have been a much better choice. I had been looking forward to listening to the whole series, but I just can't stop cringing at the accent.
