As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

Great story, even better writing
Revisado: 04-24-25
If anything, the prequels are better than the original trilogy. Highly recommended. This one is a bit too thickly laid on a tragic love story, but still very entertaining.

Historia
Ever since he was a kid, kicking broken footballs on the streets of East London in the shadow of Canary Wharf's skyscrapers, Gary wanted something better. Something a whole lot bigger. Then he won a competition run by a bank: 'The Trading Game'. The prize: a golden ticket to a new life, as the youngest trader in the whole city. A place where you could make more money than you'd ever imagined. Where your colleagues are dysfunctional maths geniuses, overfed public schoolboys and borderline psychopaths, yet they start to feel like family.

Gripping story, very nice production.
Revisado: 03-30-25
It’s usually a bad sign when someone makes their origins their entire personality. It isn’t the case with Gary Stevenson. His heartfelt, sometimes over-the-top narrative is equally gripping and informative.
Nit pick. Like the Clockwork Orange, this one would have been better without the last chapter.

Historia
In her first book, popular TikTok historian J Draper uses her characteristic wit and intellect to introduce us to extraordinary figures marginalized by history, and the lessons we can learn from them. Witty and engaging TikTok historian J.D. Draper digs out unusual stories of individuals that have shaped the world, and discovers the lessons their unique experiences can teach us. Breaking away from history as told through the lens of kings, queens and nobles, this book instead lifts the lid on 24 fascinating stories of little-known underdogs, mavericks, trailblazers and oddballs.

Witty, informative, and entertaining history book. J. Draper’s writing is light yet precise, insightful, yet humorous. The narration is very good too. Highly recommended.

Historia
Virtually all human societies were once organized tribally, yet over time most developed new political institutions which included a central state that could keep the peace and uniform laws that applied to all citizens. Some went on to create governments that were accountable to their constituents. We take these institutions for granted, but they are absent or are unable to perform in many of today’s developing countries—with often disastrous consequences for the rest of the world.

The narrative is structured very well. Surprisingly the audiobook format doesn’t impede the understanding. Especially recommended for people like me who always liked their History, but never ventured into its analysis beyond Smith or Marx.

Historia
In this delightful, acclaimed bestseller, one of the world’s leading cognitive scientists tackles the workings of the human mind. What makes us rational—and why are we so often irrational? How do we see in three dimensions? What makes us happy, afraid, angry, disgusted, or sexually aroused? Why do we fall in love? And how do we grapple with the imponderables of morality, religion, and consciousness?

Author has a great talent for expanding half a thought over a hundred pages. I got tired of waiting for a string of contrived examples, anecdotes and personal opinions to arrive at something. Just read a summary on Blinkest, save yourself time, money and frustration.

An authoritative and deeply personal narrative history of the State of Israel, by one of the most influential journalists writing about the Middle East today. Not since Thomas L. Friedman's groundbreaking From Beirut to Jerusalem has a book captured the essence and the beating heart of the Middle East as keenly and dynamically as My Promised Land.

Contrived, Pretentious, and Empty
Revisado: 07-13-24
Author is very well-versed in the Israeli nationalist narrative and smothers it thickly over the pages of this book. Yet he does not know and probably does not care about Jewish history outside of those stories.
Vilne, Jerusalem of the North is “Lithuanian capital” to the writer. Full fifty years before Stalin made it so, His Ashkenazi ancestors is somehow using Modern Hebrew pronunciation of places and king Dovid. Shtetl is somehow a prison. And Zionist leaders are Cassandras predicting the holocaust perpetrated by European newly born nationalist movements, and not such a movement.

Historia
Everything is familiar. But everything has changed. Coming back to the little community is like walking into a nightmare for Jim Gardener, poet, drunk, potential suicide. It all looks the same: the house; the furniture; Jim's friend, Bobbi; her beagle (though ageing); even the woods out at the back. But it was in the woods that Bobbi stumbled over the odd, part-buried object and felt a peculiar tingle as she brushed the soft earth away. Everything is familiar. But everything is about to change.

Historia
Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction. Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve.
