Historia
Reminiscent of Erik Larson's The Devil in the White City, this fascinating account from acclaimed author Jill Jonnes recaptures the 1889 Paris World's Fair. Casting vehement criticism aside, Gustave Eiffel built his tower to be the fair's centerpiece. Perched at the top all summer, he hosted a string of dignitaries.

Interesting Insights but too long
Revisado: 06-03-23
I appreciated the history and all that went into the Paris World's Fair. Outstanding historical perspective by weaving together many threads. But many of the people were peripheral and not relevant, such as Van Gogh, who were awkwardly forced into the story for no clear reason. I got tired of it and quit listening with still 1 hour to go. It had all been said. Why drag it out?

From the legendary actor and best-selling author: a novel about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film...and the humble comic books that inspired it. Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II.

Lost Masterpiece
Revisado: 09-24-22
This story is beautiful and mesmerizing, the narrator fully up to the challenge of reading such a spellbinding book. it's a wonder that it was lost to public awareness for 40 years, but we can be thankful it was rediscovered and that Audible has produced it.
it is not a book for just pilots and lovers of airplane tales, but for everyone who loves masterful storytelling. Beryl Markham is a pilot, adventurer, woman of action, and trainer of racehorses. It is a wonder that she could also write with such practiced grace. She and her reader infuse the storytelling with that sense of adventure and at times breathless excitement. It is a rare gift.

Historia
Raised in a militant atheist family, Sy Garte fell in love with the factual world of science. He became a respected research biochemist with an anti-theistic worldview to bolster his work—and he had no intention of seeking a God he didn't believe in. That is, until the very science he loved led him to question the validity of an atheistic worldview.

Wonderful AUDIO for a Deeply Satisfying Book
Revisado: 07-08-22
I read this book when it came out in 2019, and in fact have read it at least two more times. I was excited to find that it was out in audio. It's a book of very deep meaning and value, now with an excellent reader to help carry this important message to even more people: that science and religious faith are two mutually supportive ways of knowing God's truth.

Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Historia
Jerusalem and the Sinai desert, AD 55. In the turbulent aftermath of the crucifixion of Jesus, agents of the Roman Empire receive information about a pilgrim bearing an incendiary letter from a religious fanatic calling himself Paul the Apostle to insurrectionists in Corinth. What's in the letter could bring down an empire. The Romans hire a former legionary, a solitary man-at-arms named Telamon to intercept the letter and destroy the courier. But once he meets the courier, Telamon experiences an extraordinary conversion.

Not a historical novel. Gratuitous violence
Revisado: 09-20-21
I listened to this book because I have heard the narrator in other books and think he's terrific. But he couldn't bail this one out. Terrible book. I should have abandoned it early but kept hoping.
Don't expect a historical novel, because the tiniest bit of research shows it to be fabricated, even the broad historical outlines. The Romans were not persecuting Christians in 59 AD, nor did they do something as ridiculous as turn the entire eastern Med upside down and sack Corinth in search of Paul's letter to the Christian communities there. And they were not killing each other either, only arguing about principles and leadership in the same way churches have ever since. Even the early church would not mistake the most basics of Christ's message.
The level of violence and torture is awful to listen to. Yes, the Romans did all these things depicted, but not all the time to everyone everywhere. And for a letter which did not remotely threaten Rome's rule? Come on. They had an empire to run and this sort of behavior would not help them keep order, only stir resistance.
I can only think the author has a sad fascination with writing about torture and killing.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.
