What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Different reader. The voice simply does not demonstrate the mindset and the struggle behind James Baldwin's words. It's almost disrespectful because it simply doesn't capture the spirit of the times.

Would you be willing to try another one of Ron Butler’s performances?

Maybe for the right book but doubtful. Monotone, boring, no feeling, no change in voice

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I'm not even sure if I can finish it.

Any additional comments?

Just like actors are chosen for movies, costumes are created, sets are done, so should the voice of the reader be taken in account for audio books. Deeply disappointing.

Movie great, book not so much

I usually feel the book is better than the movie but not in this case. Great plot but too many monologues and analysis of the story and not enough of the actual story. Disappointed

Hard to follow

It was an intricate story and quite interesting but I had to keep listening to chapters more than once to keep up with so many details.
