A little-known gem
Revisado: 06-12-23
The narration blends well with the musical score, although chapters tend to end abruptly. Some elements may feel a bit dated, but for me this adds to the sense of distant fantasy. I give it an overall 5/5 in part due to its historical importance.

Historia
As Soldiers Live opens, Croaker is military dictator of all the Taglias, and no Black Company member has died in battle for four years. Croaker figures it can't last. He's right. For, of course, many of the Company's old adversaries are still around. Narayan Singh and his adopted daughter - actually the offspring of Croaker and the Lady - hope to bring about the apocalyptic Year of the Skulls. Other old enemies like Shadowcatcher, Longshadow, and Howler are also ready to do the Company harm.

Beautiful Endings

The series finale that we wanted, and which Croaker deserves. The final moments tied things together quite wonderfully. And, while I enjoyed each of the other narrators very much, having Mark Vietor back is magic.

Great conclusion!
Revisado: 04-18-21
The short stories are great, and are tied into the long story in interesting ways. The long story starts slow, in terms of plot pacing and prose quality, but both pick up nicely about a third of the way through. The narration of the action scenes which begin the act is fabulous! Eisenhorn doesn't take the spotlight for a long time, and the alternative protagonist starts out somewhat annoying, but Eisenhorn receives his due in full by the end, so the entire series is wrapped up satisfactorily.
