Historia
Against his will, Thaden was transported elsewhere in a big flash of light along with millions of other Humans from Earth, to a place where they would train to become Contenders in a whole new world. Unfortunately for him, something occurred during his transference into the “Training” program, and he was ejected from the whole training process and sent into the open mouth of an active volcano for bodily disposal.

Almost zero dialog or emotion and too many stats
Revisado: 04-14-24
I really wanted to like this book and enjoyed the start but eventually I started to notice that most of it is just a series of events with very little emotional weight or dialog bc the MC is alone for the majority of the book and even when he's around others he doesn't speak much. These issues are made worse by the overabundance of stat readouts, item descriptions, achievements, etc. they are always a full readout and are frequent enough that it feels almost like their are long pauses between any narrative.

Historia
Kris Chambers is a nobody. A 24-year-old man with a dead-end job and no prospects—and, to top it off, a heart condition that forever keeps him on his toes—he spends his life trapped between apathy, self-doubt, and mortal fear. As he walks down an unfamiliar alleyway, he stumbles upon the lifeless body of a stranger. Unbeknownst to him, this grisly discovery marks the beginning of an entirely new chapter in his life. Upon mysteriously awakening in the hospital, he learns that his heart now functions flawlessly, and he feels… different.

I wanted to like this more but the main character is so consistently stupid that it spoils a lot of the fun.

Historia
Eric is a physicist, an angel vivisectionist, and an architect of the future. He's also an accidental time traveler, stuck in the past and trying to re-create his own future. Now he's got to save the world for a better tomorrow, but not like everyone does, in general, every day. Oh, no. He has to make a better tomorrow that looks exactly the way he remembers it, or there may be no yesterday, no today, and no Eric! There is a reason he hates time travel, and it has nothing to do with physics.

First I’m a huge fan and have listened to this series multiple times bc I love it so much!
With that all said this entry is by far the worst one in the series by far. The first 3/4 of this book could be condensed down to just a few chapters and absolutely no character or plot development would be lost. If anything our protagonist has had a huge backslide in development and has lost most of what made him great. He makes noticeably stupid decisions constantly throughout and whines constantly. I understand that one of the main themes of this entry is him having lost touch with people and humanity but that only works as theming if there is a lesson to be learned or something revealed to tie it into a larger plot. As it stands this is 40+ hours of complaining about how much work there is to do and on top of that it’s deeply uninteresting work to listen to. As if that all wasn’t awful enough the story finally starts to get interesting near the end and then ends on a cliffhanger again.
I’ll definitely still get the next book but I have severely tempered my expectations going forward.

Historia
Heaven sucks. It most definitely, undeniably did not live up to the expectation of a paradise in the clouds, not with the talking spiders, evil priests of Light, and war, lots of war. Those of Light simply wouldn’t leave the fledgling village—Dedu Tedu Novus—alone. Peace was not on the menu. The seven declarations of war made that point crystal clear. Worse, in a series of unfortunate and escalating events, our stray King of Shadows finds himself where he really ought not to be.

Feels incredibly frustrating to get through.
Revisado: 09-28-23
I want to like this more but it feels like the author doesn't really know what to do with the plot. There is very little story progression in this whole book almost everything of note happens in the last hour. The few times when anything exciting happens the story suddenly stops so we can hear the MCs inner monolog or describe the situation in painfully long detail to the point where you forget you're supposed to be in the middle of a fight or tense situation. Finally the story gets weirdly obsessed with the MC crossdressing at one point. I think its supposed to be a joke but it goes on waaaaaaay to long and then gets brought up again later and again for waaay too long I'm talking chapters of this "joke" not just a quick scene. On top of all that at some point in the story the MC learns a secret that is completely world shaking and makes no real effort to try to spread it only telling a few people near the end of the book. It's such a glairing plot hole that it really takes you out of the story.
With all that said I'll probably still get the next book because I really want to like this story and hope it bounces back but I'm not very hopeful.

A huge comeback!
Revisado: 08-31-23
Like a lot of others I was really unhappy with how “Art of the Adept” and while I still think the final book was a mess from a character sense this is still a huge step forward for the story and larger events. Most of all I’m really satisfied with how time and time again whenever important characters talk about the past they stress how everything was chaos, emotions were running wild, and people weren’t making sound decisions at the time. While I still think the previous book was bad I think this was a great way to acknowledge characters were acting out of established motivations and work that into their progression instead of trying to skirt around it, ignore it, or take the story through a wildly different tone. All in all I’m back to being excited for where it will go from here instead of morbidly curious.

Incredibly boring
Revisado: 01-11-22
Every plot beat of this story feels incredibly slow and stupid. No one in this story actually thinks through their situation. All the side characters are one dimensional and basically every problem in the plot could be solved by the characters talking to each other. There’s zero depth to anything in this book yet it’s written as if some great drama is happening. Save the credit and skip this.

Sadly, time is a scarce commodity in the world of Ivalis.
