The Perfect Bridge!

After reading ‘Songbirds and Snakes’ I was unsure what to expect from this new novel. I was worried it wouldn’t live up to the rest of the series, but it’s the perfect bridge between the prequel of the 10th Hunger Games to the original trilogy of the 74th and 75th.
I loved getting more backstory on victors from the 75th games, though now I’m going to have to reread all five books in chronological order!

I got the full set during a ‘2 for 1’ credit sale. The characters are interesting, though most of the men are cast in the same mold, but the story is painfully repetitive. The same three conversations and two fight scenes are on loop with mild variation in resulting injuries. The most exciting thing to happen in the whole series was a whole three chapters in the final book. Disappointing, but four books is decent value for half a credit; the series is fine for a book on in the background.

A lighthearted, cozy read and equally enjoyable listen! While the characters are well rounded with complex and at times sad backstories the overall tone, for me, comfortably falls into ‘cozy book’ territory.

I was nervous to read how the stories of Thara Celehar would conclude, especially after the events of The Grief of Stones, but this is an extremely satisfying finale. Addison continues to deliver unexpected adventure, new companions, and the background tension of political upheaval. It’s a brilliant book!

While I appreciate what Karen Hawkins was going for with the sister Ella Dove and I enjoyed many aspects of her story I wasn’t a fan of this tale, especially in comparison to the other Dove Pond novels and novellas.

<SPOILER>

Ella has a travel itch, but more than that she’s seen and felt firsthand how much it hurts to loose someone you love. I feel like Hawkins’ insistence of a happily ever after pairing negates that very real trauma. For some people being alone is the right choice, and the way this was written it felt like the ‘magic’ decided Ella’s fate WAY before she was actually ready. That forced growth really rubbed me the wrong way. That being said, I wouldn’t be bothered by it if Hawkins wasn’t an excellent writer.

It was a decent listen, the narrator is good, but the story was fairly predictable. Anyone who has read Paula Brackston can guess how this one will go.

The world sounded really interesting when I heard about this, but the AI Narration is horrible and after the first book it became clear this is 2/3 smut to 1/3 story. It’s decently written, so if spicy is your thing give this a try, but if you’re looking for more story than sex this isn’t a good choice.

While I admit I like the first book best (so far at least! Apparently there will be at least four in the series!) this is an excellent sequel that brings in new characters, dilemmas, and of course a plethora of puns!

This gave glimpses into the history of Arthur, which I was desperately craving when I finished House in the Cerulean Sea, but is a true sequel to the story. I was worried about where the story would go because HitCS felt complete, but this continues the adventure in an honest, heartfelt, devastatingly realistic (politically), and optimistic way. There are so many real people who feel powerless and stories like this show what a difference we can each make in shaping a loving and accepting world.
Have to say, I liked reading the book more than listening to the audiobook. The narrator opted for distinct character voices that makes it VERY noticeable when a mix up occurs. There were four or five moments that really should have been re-recorded…I know I’m being persnickety, my only defense is I found it truly distracting.

This story is brilliantly written, with such engaging characters. The depth and, over time, development Klune illustrates makes the characters real.

A heads up I wish I had before reading: this is a heavy novel. Though a fantasy, it parallels the cultural genocide of Native Americans through forced schooling in the late 1800s.
