Historia
Thrift fashionista Dez Lane doesn't want to date Patrick Ruskin; she just wants to meet his mother, the editor-in-chief of Nouveau magazine. When he invites her to his family's big Easter reunion at their ancestral home, she's certain she can put up with his arrogance and fend off his advances long enough to ask Marie Caulfield-Ruskin for an internship someone with her pedigree could never nab through the regular submission route. But once all the family members are on the island and the ferry has departed, things take a dark turn.

just watch The Menu
Revisado: 02-18-25
The "reveal" is telegraphed way before you learn it, which sucks all the tension out. Narrator doesn't do much variation in delivery, which matches the author not doing much with the premise. Wholly underwhelming.

Historia
Things have been messy every since Ryan and I go together. Martin and Jack hate him for stealing me from Martin, and everyone hates me. However, as long as I have Ryan, I will take what the world gives me. But, why is Ryan acting strange? He’s always treating being with me like a chore, and he rarely touches me. When we are together, he becomes selfish and distant. I want to know what’s wrong with him. I’ll have to ask the one person who doesn’t seem to hate me....

frankly confusing
Revisado: 02-06-22
A lot of brother drama, a horse that keeps changing genders, poor narration, just a confusing story with no real heat index at all. I spent most of the hour confused.

Historia
Alma Katsu calls My Heart Is a Chainsaw “a homage to slasher films that also manages to defy and transcend genre.” On the surface is a story of murder in small-town America. But beneath is its beating heart: a biting critique of American colonialism, Indigenous displacement, and gentrification, and a heartbreaking portrait of a broken young girl who uses horror movies to cope with the horror of her own life.

Astonishing
Revisado: 11-29-21
A celebration and subversion of slashers, developing its own shorthand and burrowing its way into your brain. Surprisingly, this book is able to improve upon a horror format by extending all those critical moments of tension - slow-mo for the soul. The climax is agonizing in the best way.
I narrate for a living so audio books are NOT my chosen medium, but this novel is absolutely served by Cara Gee's performance. Jade Daniels will live in your head, rent-free, forever.
I recommend listening in long stints and hanging on for dear life.

Historia
Gates Foster lost his daughter, Lucy, 17 years ago. He's never stopped searching. Suddenly, a shocking new development provides Foster with his first major lead in over a decade, and he may finally be on the verge of discovering the awful truth. Meanwhile, Mitzi Ives has carved out a space among the Foley artists creating the immersive sounds giving Hollywood films their authenticity. Using the same secret techniques as her father before her, she's become an industry-leading expert in the sound of violence and horror, creating screams so bone-chilling, they may as well be real.

return to form

This is a return to Classic Palahniuk, and Jefferson Mays does a wonderful job with the active, aggressive noir prose.
