Historia
In November 1864, just days after the reelection of President Abraham Lincoln, General William T. Sherman vowed to "make Georgia howl." The hero of Shiloh and his 65,000 Federal troops destroyed the great city of Atlanta, captured Savannah, and cut a wide swath of destruction through Georgia and the Carolinas on their way to Virginia. A scorched-earth campaign that continues to haunt the Southern imagination, Sherman's "March to the Sea" and ensuing drive north was a crucial turning point in the War between the States.

A work jarring to the ear
Revisado: 03-12-25
If you are looking for an account of Sherman's marches from Atlanta to Washington as seen through Southern eyes, this is the book for you. Every accusation against the Yankees is given full credence; nearly every one against Rebel cavalry is explained away. The narration is jarring, as the word "negro" is often pronounced with the first vowel sounding rather like a short I. The attempts at accents fall flat as well. If you're a "southron", you'll enjoy this book; otherwise probably not.

Historia
Vicksburg, Mississippi, was the last stronghold of the Confederacy on the Mississippi River. It prevented the Union from using the river for shipping between the Union-controlled Midwest and New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. The Union navy tried to take Vicksburg, which sat on a high bluff overlooking the river, but couldn't do it. It took Grant's army and Admiral David Porter's navy to successfully invade Mississippi and lay siege to Vicksburg, forcing the city to surrender.

Revisado: 10-04-22
I didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted to. the author seems to bear some animus against General Grant, and credits every ridiculous rumor about him as if it were gospel truth. He often says that Grant's successes were due to others, but he setbacks were entirely his own. It isn't until the last chapter of the book that a true picture of General Grant's accomplishments is painted. There is much information here if you can straighten the slant.

Historia
The worst idea in history is back! Communism has wrecked national economies, enslaved whole peoples, and killed more than a hundred million men and women. What's not to like? Too many young Americans are supporting communism. Millennials prefer socialism to capitalism, and 25 percent have a positive view of Lenin. One in four Americans believe that George W. Bush killed more people than Joseph Stalin. And 69 percent of millennials would vote for a socialist for president. They ought to know better.

the truth about communism
Revisado: 09-03-22
There are some terrible books being taught in America schools. Some of the worst paint a rosy picture of the history and promises of communism. This book by Paul Kengor should be taught in every high school and college in America. it reveals the true terrible record of communism and unmasks the biggest supporters of that evil ideology in America today. One great thing is that it gives many book recommendations that can be used by readers who wish to study this facet or that facet of the story in greater depth. Americans today believe some absolute untruths about their nation and about communism. This book is part of the necessary correction, or at least it deserves to be. The reader did a little too much first syllable accenting for my taste, but otherwise did a fine job.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant is often accused of being a cold-hearted butcher of his troops. In Ulysses S. Grant: A Victor, Not a Butcher, historian Edward H. Bonekemper III proves that Grant's casualty rates actually compared favorably with those of other Civil War generals. His perseverance, decisiveness, moral courage, and political acumen place him among the greatest generals of the Civil War - indeed, of all military history.

worthwhile if flawed
Revisado: 08-23-22
This book reveals a lot of information the average Civil War casual student will not know. It suffers somewhat from over- argument- I admire Ulysses S Grant hugely, but some of the descriptions of actions battles and casualties are rather slanted in the General's favor. I can still recommend the book however, and I'm glad to have read it. The reader did a very solid job and my few criticisms are of the I think he mispronounced that word nature. It's a good book.

Historia
Most Americans hold basic misconceptions about the Confederacy, the Civil War, and the actions of subsequent neo-Confederates. For example, two thirds of Americans - including most history teachers - think the Confederate States seceded for "states' rights". The 150th anniversary of secession and Civil War provides a moment for all Americans to hear these documents, properly set in context by award-winning sociologist and historian James W. Loewen and coeditor Edward H. Sebesta to put in perspective the mythology of the Old South.

Valuable but flawed
Revisado: 08-14-22
Overall, this is a very valuable book, and one that should be read by anyone who still believes that the Civil War was caused by anything other than slavery and racism. these documents make very difficult reading and listening. however, all too predictably, the author's try to claim that white supremacists gravitated from the Democratic Party of the Jim Crow era into the Republican Party, although they graciouslyadmit that not all conservative Republicans are racists. In order to buttress this questionable claim, the author's invoke the names of Thad Cochran Trent Lott Dick Army and Sonny Perdue, but they somehow managed to forget about Senator Robert Byrd, former Grand Kleagle of the Ku Klux Klan, and the very man who shocked national audiences with his unapologetic use of a racial slur on a Sunday talk show interview. This tendentious claim mars this work but does not negate its value. Overall, I can still with clear conscience recommend this book.

A flawed but very good book
Revisado: 07-10-22
The author is becoming one of my favorite authors on the subject of the Civil War. This book does not disappoint. In his evaluation of the Lincoln Grant partnership, Bonekemper shows how Lincoln and Grant grew to become the best of partners and fine friends. I was particularly pleased at the author's appreciation of General George Thomas, who often is unappreciated by fans of Grant and Sherman. George Thomas was one of the few men that Ulysses Grant consistently mistreated. This book loses its fifth star because of the seemingly endless repetition of phrases and observations, which adds at least an hour to its run time. The reader of this book did a fine professional job.

Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States has sold over 2.5 million copies and is still required reading in some high school and college classrooms. But its polemic rewriting of American history as a story of oppression is an agenda-driven fairy tale that has no place in academia. In Debunking Howard Zinn, Mary Grabar debunks Howard Zinn’s lies and traces the damage his mega-bestseller has done to American education, culture, and politics.

a long overdue exposing of a hack propagandist
Revisado: 04-16-22
The author exposes one of the worst books ever to enter the American education system. communist Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States has sold over 2.4 million copies, many of them mandatory purchases for college and even High School courses. Zinn's book is ahistorical, leftist to the point of communist propaganda, as the author meticulously demonstrates. this book is wildly necessary, and has not received the acclaim it deserves. I enjoyed the readers tone, as she reflected the author's scorn for the rubbish she was exposing. I cannot recommend this book highly enough

Authors Mark Edward Lender and Garry Wheeler Stone argue that in political terms, the Battle of Monmouth constituted a pivotal moment in the War for Independence. Drawing on a wide range of historical sources—many never before used, including archaeological evidence—Lender and Stone disentangle the true story of Monmouth and provide the most complete and accurate account of the battle, including both American and British perspectives.

What makes the Civil War so fascinating is that it presents an endless number of "what if" scenarios - moments when the outcome of the war (and therefore world history) hinged on a single small mistake or omission. In this audiobook, Civil War historian Edward Bonekemper highlights the 10 biggest Civil War blunders, focusing in on intimate moments of military indecision and inaction involving great generals like Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and William T. Sherman as well as less effective generals such as George B. McClellan and Benjamin Butler.

I enjoy Edward Bonekemper's work, but the audible sneering of the narrator diminished my enjoyment. I preferred the narrator who read The Lost Cause. I still recommend the book, though.
