Would you listen to See a Little Light again? Why?

Nope!

What didn’t you like about Bob Mould’s performance?

While the story of Bob's life was fascinating and gut-wrenching at times, his performance as narrator took me out of the book way too often. You could tell at way too many times in the book that he really didn't want to be reading it. If it's possible to hear someone roll their eyes, it's found within this book.

Any additional comments?

It's tough giving a book as open and honest as this a so-so review but my main complaints are not about the quality of the writing or of the subject matter but listening to Bob read his own work. If I was writing a review of just the book, it would be different but this is a review of the audiobook, so being specific to that is what I'm striving to do.

I probably went into this book like any other fan of The Smiths: I wanted storied. Lots of them. They're there, but not as many as I would've liked. I learned more about Marr's life and music post-Smiths than I ever knew and that'll lead me to learning and listening and that's what Marr has always been about.

The author reads her book very well and her inflections make the book even better but the story didn't go too in depth into her actual acting roles (and her witty take when she does talk about them makes you want her to talk about them more than she ultimately does).

Would you consider the audio edition of Autobiography to be better than the print version?

Yes. When the reader is engaging it adds to the experience as opposed to slogging through just to digest the story.

What did you like best about this story?

The way he tells his story. And it is his story and not necessarily the story of The Smiths. While I would have enjoyed more details about the creation of his music I know that there are plenty of books that deal with just that. This is his life though and he tells it in a way that only he can. Very literate and literary.

What does David Morrissey bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He does a wonderful job with this material. He doesn't seem to interpret what he thinks the story should be or how it should be told, but he adds an elegance that makes the material shine.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I did laugh, actually. A few times. A big smile when I'd hear a certain turn of phrase.

Any additional comments?

This is not a history of The Smiths and while some of the stories from his childhood are things that will likely lead me to Google some items it was a pleasure to listen to.

Would you listen to Every Day is an Atheist Holiday! again? Why?

Absolutely! I've listened to it twice already and will continue to listen to it over and over again. Penn could read the phone book and I would be interested.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

The stories. The way Penn tells about his life, be it good or bad, is really compelling.

What does Penn Jillette bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

HIS voice. I love listening to a book read by the author. They know what to punctuate and what to leave alone. It's the best experience if you can find it.

Really interesting story about Hip Hop's history.

I enjoyed the historical aspects of the topic. Hearing about the different players that helped create Hip Hop was nice because outside of bits and pieces from other sources, I didn't have an overview of how it came to be.

Later in the book, while the story is still good, it starts dealing with radio and the importance that it played and at this point my attention started to wain. It's still great history at this point but what I enjoyed most was the history of the people and the record labels and while the radio/magazine sections are important to the overall history, I just didn't care about these people enough. After a while of wanting the story to go back to the actual people making the music I had to remind myself that this book is not about the history of Hip Hop, it's about the history of the Business of Hip Hop. Big difference.

This is my first book by both the author and narrator and I would seek out books by either in the future.
