Historia
Conscripted into the Polish army as Hitler’s forces draw closer, Jewish soldier Tolek Klings vows to return to his wife, Klara, and son, Juliusz. However, the army is rife with anti-Semitism and Tolek is relentlessly tormented. As the Germans invade Poland, he is faced with a terrible dilemma: flee home to protect his family - and risk being shot as a deserter - or remain a soldier, hoping reports of women and children being spared by the occupying forces are true.

Such an incredible story, this needs to be a movie. The writing took me to the scene of each section of the book as I experienced the war and its aftermath through the eyes of one resilient man. The narration was a bit overdramatic at times but it is indeed a dramatic story so I can't fault him much.

Good premise, excellent narration, awful ending
Revisado: 05-27-23
I sped through Oona Out of Order. The premise is well executed for the most part and the narrator does an excellent job transitioning between characters and relaying subtext. But the main character doesn't seem to develop much from one leap to the next and at times is frustratingly self absorbed and difficult to root for. Also I don't want to give spoilers here but the ending was rushed and downright terrible. I actually thought the app had skipped over chapters. It's like the author just decided they were done writing and called it a day. I'd like to give 0 stars bc of the ending but I did enjoy the premise and was engaged up to that point so I'm giving 2 stars.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

This story is so well told, and the narration brings it to life beautifully. I felt transported to Demon's world, where I wanted to beg him to make better choices while still understanding that he wasn't equipped to. A thoroughly engrossing experience, two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Historia
Carrie Soto is fierce, and her determination to win at any cost has not made her popular. But by the time she retires from tennis, she is the best player the world has ever seen. She has shattered every record and claimed twenty Grand Slam titles. And if you ask Carrie, she is entitled to every one. She sacrificed nearly everything to become the best, with her father, Javier, as her coach. A former champion himself, Javier has trained her since the age of two.

Not great, disappointing

Documentary of a narcissistic tennis player
Revisado: 10-25-22
To be fair I'm only two hours into this ten hour audiobook. So far, I'm bored to tears and it's unlikely I'll continue. Carrie Soto is a whiny, self-absorbed bully and I've yet to find a reason to root for her. The vast majority of the story so far consists of play-by-plays of her tennis matches coupled with her grating inner monologue. What a disappointment. I eagerly anticipated this book after loving Malibu Rising, Daisy Jones and the Six, and Evelyn Hugo, but it seems TJR is now resting on her laurels.

Historia
Mrs. Post, the President and First Lady are here to see you. . . . So begins another average evening for Marjorie Merriweather Post. Presidents have come and gone, but she has hosted them all. Growing up in the modest farmlands of Battle Creek, Michigan, Marjorie was inspired by a few simple rules: always think for yourself, never take success for granted, and work hard—even when deemed American royalty, even while covered in imperial diamonds.

That's 10 hours of my life I'll never get back
Revisado: 03-30-22
I still have a few hours left of this audiobook, with Ms. Post diving into her fourth marriage, and I've gone from losing interest to being annoyed that I stuck with it as long as I did.
I went in knowing next to nothing about Marjorie Post, but was intrigued by the times and places she lived, and the things she and her family accomplished. Having gotten this far, I can't decide if she really was oblivious and vapid or if she was done a terrible disservice by this writer. At one point we go from a drawn out description of the finery and furs Ms. Post (now Mrs. Davies) brings with her to Russia, to her observations about how the people there are starving and miserable. Intentional juxtaposition intended to demonstrate what an awful human Ms. Post was, or simply a poorly told story? I'll never know.
Also this author really needs a thesaurus. After hearing the words "decamped" and "glowered" one too many times, I rolled my eyes hard enough to make me finally give up on this story.
This book is way too long with way too much time spent on the minutiae of all the things Ms. Post accumulated, and her pattern of jumping into the same marriage over and over again, and too little time spent exploring the true essence of who she was and the fascinating time in which she lived.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Slowish start but builds into a compelling story

Loved the narration, done in the style of a series of interviews. It took several chapters for the story to really grab me, but ultimately it did and I was captivated.
