The first half was masterfully well constructed, keeping the reader guessing about connections at at the denouement at the edge of our seats. The 2nd part was a drawn out montage of battle, flipping perspectives without drawing us in enough to care about any of the characters

Better and better

Both the series and the narrator are getting better and better. Gomez Pugh inhabits Victor Bayne so effectively I can’t imagine another voice for him. The Jacob voice is a little low for my hearing range, but I don’t care, I love these characters so much I and greedy for the next book

Interesting with every entry. The world building is intensely real, all the details of the para enforcement ring real when set against the contemporary Chicago skyline

Characters and dialogue are on point

Scalzi hits all my favorite buttons.. great characters and dialogue. Convincing world building with the right amount of detail. You can totally enjoy this book without having read the first in the series. Will W’s reading works well. He paces this very well and convincingly inhabits the main character. I also appreciate that he doesn’t default to a “high” voice to signify female.

The outcome was not for-ordained and the characters emotional arcs were intense. Engaging and tense and well conceived.

Zachery Quinto made this great

Quinto did a masterful job both with voices and with the overall tone of a noir. He used pacing well and just made this work- the whole series is a delight and I hope Scalzi and Quinto have several more stories to go. The exposition at the end was a pretty big dump, but that works with the genre I guess. I love Scalzi’s use of dialogue and action to tell the story. The tight focus keeps things snappy, also, good use of Covid in this twist on reality.

Good premise- compelling story arc

Compelling characters and world building. The writing is a little too much tell rather than show, and a little too much circles and repetition which weakens the characters unfortunately. The plotting was solid enough to be compelling and the through lines to subsequent books are clearly laid out in a way that whets curiosity. Voice acting is rock solid with the differs characters all clearly distinct and consistently so.

Gomez Pugh does a fantastic job on all the voices but particularly Vic. My favorite character is alive in new ways.

Realistic and romantically dreamy both

I liked that the character matches how some survivors of childhood assault behave while not making those traits the characters only traits. I like the male lead’s similar existence as a survivor of trauma and also a real person. The community felt real, the narrator was very good.
