Historia
A murder victim dumped at the dead end of a lonely country road, face and hands obliterated by a shotgun blast, is not the way sheriff’s detective Nick Fourcade wants to start his week. His only lead takes him to the family of a hometown hero suddenly gone missing. Marc Mercier left his home for a weekend hunting trip and hasn’t been seen since.

Thoroughly entertaining

I really liked the plot and the way the author wove the story arcs together. The narrator did well for the most part. Cajun accents are impossible to imitate, but I do wish she’d pronounced the place names in the correct south Louisiana way.

Historia
At birth, Violet and Rose Flowers were identical, save for a tiny bluish-purple mark gracing Violet’s slender neck. By nineteen, their temperaments distinguish them, as different as the flowers their mother named them for—Violet, wild and outgoing, and Rose, solitary and reserved. Still, they are each other’s world. Then, on a sweltering, terrible August night in 1928, an explosion rocks Lamb’s Dance Hall in Possum Flats, Missouri, engulfing it in flames, leaving one twin among the dozens dead, and her sister’s life forever changed.

Excellent story

The plot was convoluted but intriguing. Characters were well developed and mostly likable. Author and narrator did a great job creating a believable teenager. Narrators were superb.

This is a combination of my least favorite genres, but I liked it. Characters and storyline were interesting and not too far fetched. It reminded me of the Twilight series and I’m sure there will be sequels.

Don’t bother
Revisado: 01-06-25
What a waste of time and a credit! This is a collection of the most unlikeable characters I’ve ever seen. The plot, such as it is, is quite boring. It is MUCH too long. I was determined to finish it, and for 3 hours or so, it became interesting. Then it ended and I realized the outcome was even more bleak and the characters less sympathetic than I’d previously realized. This book is simply awful. But the narrator was good.

I’m not a fan
Revisado: 12-22-24
One of the New York Times best books of 2024, but I didn’t like it. I found it too long. Too involved. Too many foreign phrases not translated into English. Too many whiny, morally bankrupt drunks posing as intellectuals. Narration was outstanding. It’s all that saved it. Not worth a credit. Not worth the time.
