Historia
This original and lucid account of the complexities of love and its essential role in human well-being draws on the latest scientific research. Three eminent psychiatrists tackle the difficult task of reconciling what artists and thinkers have known for thousands of years about the human heart with what has only recently been learned about the primitive functions of the human brain.

Bummed about the narration
Revisado: 03-05-25
Maybe it's just me. These things are very subjective. I found the content is so rich and poignant, and the narrator's tone didn't get near the spirit of things. I struggled with it for a while, then bailed and bought the print book.

Historia
My name is Betty. I have depression. I have passion. I have tits the size of printers. And also: I have a brain full of women. There’s Blanche VonF--kery, Ingrid St. Rash, and a host of others—some cowering in sweatpants, some howling plans for revolution, and one, oh God, and one . . . slowly vomiting up a crow? Worried for her. These women take turns at the wheel. That’s why I feel like a million selves. With a raised eyebrow and a soul-scalpel, I’d like to tell you how I got this way. Because maybe you feel this way too.

Historia
Irvin D. Yalom has made a career of investigating the lives of others. In this profound memoir, he turns his writing and his therapeutic eye on himself. He opens his story with a nightmare: He is 12 and is riding his bike past the home of an acne-scarred girl. Like every morning, he calls out, hoping to befriend her, "Hello Measles!" But in his dream, the girl's father makes Yalom understand that his daily greeting had hurt her. For Yalom, this was the birth of empathy; he would not forget the lesson.

Dissapointed
Revisado: 03-21-21
I have so very much appreciated and benefitted by Dr. Yalom's writings. This title is an exception. I am accustomed to Dr. Yalom's speaking voice and this narration felt over-performed. Also, the endorsement of TalkSpace Chapter was a clunky insertion and felt like an advertisement as opposed to a thoughtful consideration of what text therapy and this type of therapeutic conversation has really meant to him. I may have a bias because I just watched a YouTube presentation of Dr. Yalom's sponsored by TalkSpace and had begun to wonder if he has a substantial paid arrangement with TalkSpace. He might have left it out or given it more thorough consideration.

Historia
"Life changes fast....You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends." These were among the first words Joan Didion wrote in January 2004. Her daughter was lying unconscious in an intensive care unit, a victim of pneumonia and septic shock. Her husband, John Gregory Dunne, was dead. The night before New Year's Eve, while they were sitting down to dinner, he suffered a massive and fatal coronary. The two had lived and worked side by side for nearly 40 years.

Overproduced: why the music?
Revisado: 12-11-16
I've seen the author interviewed a few times and I didn't feel like this was her voice, her presentation of her own work. I also didn't feel like spirit of a number of passages was captured. Finally, there is music fading in & out at chapter breaks. this was terribly distracting and the sound mix was bad so narrator was competing with music.
