Historia
This is the story of the rise to national power of a desperately poor young man from the Texas Hill Country. The Path to Power reveals in extraordinary detail the genesis of the almost superhuman drive, energy, and ambition that set LBJ apart. It follows him from the Hill Country to New Deal Washington, from his boyhood through the years of the Depression to his debut as Congressman, his heartbreaking defeat in his first race for the Senate, and his attainment, nonetheless, at age 31, of the national power for which he hungered.

For Sergeant Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police, the case begins when he finds a pair of boots in the rabbit brush beside a wilderness trail. The boots' owner lies nearby, his palms and soles "scalped" in what appears to be a witch's scavenging. The federal investigators tell Chee to mind his own business. But a series of disturbing events draws Chee into a dangerous web of intrigue spun by Navajo sorcery and white greed.

Tony Hillerman writes beautifully about the Navajo culture as he weaves it into his mysteries. I also love the slow pacing of the books. I savor each one.

Historia
When a worker goes missing from a North Sea gas platform, there seem to be just two possible explanations - it was a tragic accident or a suicide. It does not take Smith and his detectives long, however, to discover that James Bell led a double life back onshore in Kings Lake, a life complicated enough to make him at least one dangerous enemy. Before the case can be unraveled, Smith must get a new team working together.

She'd been working on a special task force within North London's Nigerian community, and Acting Detective Superintendent Thomas Lynley is assigned to the case, which has far-reaching cultural associations that have nothing to do with life as he knows it. In his pursuit of a killer determined to remain hidden, he's assisted by Detective Sergeants Barbara Havers and Winston Nkata.

What a disappointment!
Revisado: 01-22-22
For all of us who read these books to enjoy the characters of Lynley, Simon, Deborah, Nkata, and Havers, you will be disappointed in this book. There is absolutely no character development of any of the characters we have come to love. We don't learn one new thing about any of them. Instead, Ms. George has just written a plot-driven story with a tedious plot. She has let all Lynley fans down.

A wonderfully quiet book
Revisado: 04-23-19
Sue Miller writes wonderfully quiet, thoughtful, beautiful stories of our interior lives. If that sounds boring, it isn’t at all. She takes you into a character’s life, where you reside. You come to know this woman (and the central character is alway a woman) and you thoroughly enjoy coming to know her and learning about her life in the way you do making a new friend.

Historia
Some days Nora Nolan thinks that she and her husband, Charlie, lead a charmed life - except when there’s a crisis at work, a leak in the roof at home, or a problem with their twins at college. And why not? New York City was once Nora’s dream destination, and her clannish dead-end block has become a safe harbor, a tranquil village amid the urban craziness. Then one morning she returns from her run to discover that a terrible incident has shaken the neighborhood, and the fault lines begin to open: on the block, at her job, especially in her marriage.

Slow, light, and not worth reading any of his others
Revisado: 10-05-15
This story features a French policeman in a quaint French town who likes food, drink, his dog, and friends. That's the whole story. If you want to read a book about how the French eat, you might find this charming. If you want a well-paced mystery, characters that develop, humor, depth, or a memorable read, this author doesn't deliver. The mystery is very thin, the plot is slow, and character development is nil. It's ho-hum at best.
