Solid Stoicism Listen with Some Quirks

This audiobook has a great narrator, though his use of Kermit the Frog voice for quotes feels cartoonish. The author blends Stoic ideas with helpful interpretation, but some, like calling Seneca’s role with Nero hypocritical, oversimplify—ignoring his possibly heroic intent to curb Nero’s harm. So listen critically; it’s worth it with caveats!

Good but anti-West bias and inaccuracies

Nice work, but incredibly anti-West biased: e.g., Great Britain become an empire by accident but middle-East fell apart because of bad Westerners (not Mongols and mismanagement). Also, the author’s view is that tourists overpaying on Middle Eastern bazaars is just business but Middle East getting little for uncertain oil prospecting concessions is cheating. There are some outright errors too. E.g., the author claims that the phrase “The ink of the scholar is more precious than the blood of the martyr” is a Hadith. While widely quoted in Islamic literature, it turns out not to be in well-authenticated Hadith. So listen with a grain of salt.

In the first few minutes of the book this “financial prophet” and “expert” said several things that seemed wrong to me. Finally he said something that was easily verifiable—he said that Berkshire Hathaway stock did not outperform S&P 500 after crises’ starting with 2000. This is blatantly wrong. Investing in BRK.A in any of the years since 2000 was far better than investing in S&P500. I checked years 2000, 2001, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and then deleted the book. Fortunately it was only 2.99 on sale (he should be paying us to read it).

The author did an excellent job outlining the editing mind frame to look at life. Good examples and excellent writing. The reading was a bit slow so I listened at 1.7 speed and it went great.

A necessary companion to “Deep Work.” Well thought out and organized. Great insights along the way. Well done!

Seriously, someone this passionate and knowledgeable about financial underbelly of the Wall Street should be their Chair, not an attorney. Until then, in god we trust…

Robin is great and this book doesn’t define him. The book is not earth shattering: a good listicle of common sense principles about decent living (not all necessarily solid: e.g., treat your guests like gods… huh? why??) in 101 mini essays. It feels more like conversations with friends on a nice summer night after a glass of wine or two.

Here’s the gist of the message in the book: Americans should make up for what Indians do not want to do for themselves. He discusses multiple examples of how Indians were given all of the opportunities to get out of poverty and how they chose not to do it, but then blames the rest of Americans for not doing more. Oh yeah, and he also does mix in a few insights you actually thought you’d learn in this book.

I had no idea Malcolm was this biased. You could see his passive aggressiveness throughout the book, yet in the end he says he listened to it and didn't feel any bias from... himself. If Malcolm was doing the rankings of objectivity, he'd rank himself as #1 in other words (an inside joke Malcolm and careful readers will understand). And rankings... oh the rankings. Malcolm criticizes them left and right (mostly left, ahem) but offers absolutely no solution. He believes capital markets are racist because bonds from historically black colleges have wider spread (hint: this would be called arbitrage opportunity that hedge funds would quickly correct by buying up bonds priced too cheaply). And he feels ok calling typical White rich girls "Jennys." Malcolm, are you sure you didn't notice any bias in your book or maybe objectivity isn't a skill you can get after 10,000 hours of practice?

Kristen’s book is outstanding: She beautifully describes the nature of fear and illustrates key points with her personal experiences. Fear is a complex subject so the book deals with many aspects of it likely confusing those negative reviewers. In my view, the points are actually very clear. The book helped me understand better the nature of fear and how to deal with it. My key takeaway: listen to your fears and make efforts to address them if can prior to acting, accepting risks of acting despite your fears if it’s worth it.
