Historia
Tim and Abi have always been different from their peers. Precociously bright, they spend their evenings in their parents' attic discussing the macabre and unexplained, zealously re-reading books on folklore, hauntings and the supernatural. In particular, they are obsessed with photographs of ghostly apparitions and the mix of terror and delight they provoke in their otherwise boring and safe childhoods. But when Tim and Abi decide to fake a photo of a ghost to frighten an unpopular school friend, they set in motion a deadly and terrifying chain of events.

Atmospheric, meandering, but thoughtful
Revisado: 04-24-25
Likes: subject & setting, reminiscent of vintage British horror films. Some really cool ideas about ghosts. Narrator was capable but (see below)
Dislikes: the reader read this far too slowly and in a far too measured tone. When I sped it up to 1,5 x it was perfect—except for his rendition of female voices. He rendered them in a nasal whine I could not handle and would skip over after a bit. A tip for future readers: please don’t make your women whiney.
Other dislikes: this is an ongoing problem I’m finding with current fiction; it doesn’t hit the mark with the ending. Story arcs are either not completed or they dwindle down to no resolution. This debut novel had promise, got bogged down in the meandering plot, and then vanished a bit like a ghost under bright light. Also—what did it want to be? A ghost story? A coming of age? A comment on manipulative and unethical science?
All said, it had its entertainments. Solid B+ from me.

Historia
I>Shards of Honor is the novel in which Lois McMaster Bujold introduced the science-fiction world to Barrayar and Aral Vorkosigan, Beta Colony and Cordelia Naismith. From this beginning the author has created a multigenerational saga spanning time as well as space. Bujold is generally recognized as the current exemplar of the character-based science-fiction adventure story.

Writing, reading (narrator voice) and overall theme
Revisado: 01-22-25
Women helping women should be a more common theme. Loved it. That it is well written and a masterful unspooling of narrative helps as well. Recommended.

Historia
For more than a century, some of the world’s most important thinkers and leaders—men like Arthur Conan Doyle and William Butler Yeats—gathered once a month and discussed the supernatural at The Ghost Club in London. In the early 1900s the club's chairman was Harry Price, the world’s most well-known ghost hunter. He and other members, like Harry Houdini, sought to debunk the charlatans who preyed on vulnerable people with fake seances, tarot readings, and spiritual encounters.

Entertaining and historical
Revisado: 10-13-23
Enjoyable—covered some ground I knew about (Borley Rectory) and some I didn’t (Harry Price). The Ghost Club is presented in a spooky Victorian way—I’d love to have had dinner with them, with W. B. Yeats at the table! Ms. Dawson reads well. The tension between reality (skepticism) and faith (credulity) is not resolved, but there’s no reason for it to be solved. Lovely touches of atmosphere throughout. Thank you!

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

This is probably the third time I’ve read through Dune and the first time as an audiobook. I enjoyed the readers immensely—also enjoyed the shift between voices and points of view.

Excellent
Revisado: 07-24-22
Pacing, characters, intriguing plot points, intimidating and weird villains, ultimate satisfactory conclusion with possible hints at further stories. I want to hear more of these characters! This was expressly what I want when I want a novel like this. Thank you, Mr. Koontz, and your amazing imagination!
