trigger warning
Revisado: 04-19-25
writing was well done, the performance was well done. I just wish I had known it was about domestic violence, rape, and miscarriage. and even though the women sort of win out in the very end, I was barely able to get through it myself.

Wonderful narration. Mediocre stories.

Amazing performance; Annoying sound effects!
Revisado: 01-28-25
These stories are classics and wonderfully written and Stephen Fry is an amazing actor and narrator and, as usual, gives a beautiful performance for each story.
My only criticism (and for me it's a big one) is that someone decided to do the disservice of adding sound effects and inserted random, annoying, intrusive, distracting, repetitive music that shows up without apparent reason throughout each story.
If I could have given some advice to whoever was producing this, I would have said to use the k-i-s-s method (keep it simple stupid) when putting this together. As they say, if you want to make 'Shakespeare' original and refreshing, forgo the bells and whistles and just do it well!

In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

disjointed hard to follow terrible sound quality!
Revisado: 09-20-24
the story is disjointed, hard to follow, and sound quality is terrible! it would have been an interesting listen if the tinny echoing sound quality had been attended to. or if the different volumes for different characters and music had been attended to. and if the idea of this being a listening experience and not a visual experience had been attended to.
so many times there were characters interacting at different volumes and then there was a sudden scuffle of some kind what sounded like possible gunfire and no explanation as to what's actually happening. would not recommend. on a good note the actors we're pretty good.

very good story, except
Revisado: 09-10-24
love everything about the story! except, I absolutely cannot stand the main love interest! he is written as an emotionally stunted would be abuser who's only redeeming quality might be that he has some warped code of honor. he is controlling with a weak, brittle ego. in this regard, this is just another fairy tale that depicts the brooding, broken male who meets that one special special girl who is somehow able to fix him, when really he's just an abuser in the making. unfortunately, also the female main character is his gullible naive counterpart! typical Predator/Prey relationship and the longing, drawn- out love angst is boring and predictable!
other than that, the story itself, outside of the love interest BS, is really good! the story is interesting and engaging!
I will listen to the second book But, if it turns out that this story supports the fairy tale that there's one special girl out there that will heal what ails the broken male predator, a girl who loves him so well that it turns him into a kind, supportive, helpful, loyal, mate... If this turns out to be yet another story that teaches young girls to put up with being treated poorly in pursuit of the man of her dreams, which of course makes absolutely no sense, I will never read anything from this author again. my fingers are crossed that it goes a different direction!

great story! great narrator!
Revisado: 09-06-24
I have to give compliments to the narrator! she was so good and accents matches the characters! it's the perfect example of how a narrator can make the story or Break It! there's nothing worse than an American accent coming out of a European character and it happens all the time! the story is really well done the characters are wonderful the only complaint I have is that the sex scenes are too long and too explicit. I know there are those who love that and don't get me wrong, they're really well written, I'm just not a big fan of long, explicit sex scenes in my books, stories, or movies. so, that's just my personal taste. overall though, I definitely recommend this book!

just okay
Revisado: 08-24-24
short stories. unfortunately there was no separation between the stories, so unless you've read them before it might take a moment to realize one story had ended and you've moved on to the next. because there's no experience of a beginning and end to each story, the experience of listening to these short stories was not great. The Only Name you are introduced to is The Minority Report, it would has been nice to know the name of each subsequent story was.

very original well-paced and entertaining!
Revisado: 08-17-24
enjoyed everything about this. I did think it was odd that the narrator had an English accent while most of the characters were American, though I prefer most English accents to almost any American accent any day! (I am an American and I get enough of that listening to myself) I did find it odd that the narrator mispronounced Library calling it 'the Li-bary', so that was distracting, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book.

Very well done with One exception!
Revisado: 07-19-24
The performance and story is very well done and very entertaining and I would have given five stars on everything if it weren't for the weird way everybody speaks! In many of the interactions between characters it's as though this writer has never heard of a contraction! Nobody speaks this way, except perhaps robots, Maybe. Instead of 'I can't' it's 'I cannot', instead of 'I won't', it's 'I will not'. If it were just a scattering of this to make a point, that's one thing, but there are so few contractions that it makes the characters interactions feel over-formal and stilted! The story was amazing but the way everybody speaks can be so distracting!
Overall, I recommend the story, I just needed to give that constructive criticism.

wonderfully written! beautifully told! a fantasy without being ridiculous, historical romance without being simpering or obsequious, a ferocious heroin (with the exception of the intro music at the beginning and the outro music at the end of the book that was horrible to experience) I recommend this book and it's predecessor over and over and over again!
