Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Truly one of the best sci-fi books ever written
Revisado: 12-08-22
I don’t even know what to say. PHM is just a true masterpiece. As a biologist, I loved the way Weir brought in concepts of evolution and life’s beginnings. I do wish Weir expounded more on some of the biological details, but he makes up for it with his explanations on other fields.
The ending of PHM is one which does something important, it does not completely satisfy the listener, but is appropriate and logical. It will leave me thinking of this story for the rest of my life.
So glad I had a bathroom remodel to tackle and needed an audio book to keep my mind occupied.

Historia
Without our domesticated plants and animals, human civilization as we know it would not exist. We would still be living at subsistence level as hunter-gatherers if not for domestication. It is no accident that the cradle of civilization - the Middle East - is where sheep, goats, pigs, cattle, and cats commenced their fatefully intimate associations with humans.

Science writing at its best!
Revisado: 12-11-15
I work in the meat industry, and learning the story of the animals that make my job possible was fascinating. I've never appreciated our barnyard companions so much. The finals chapters, asking the grandiose question, 'are humans domesticated?' brings up ideas and concepts that will stay with you for a very long time. This is definitely a scientific book that will leave your mind pondering new ideas for a while. I can't recommend enough.

Historia
Paul Falkowski looks "under the hood" of microbes to find the engines of life, the actual working parts that do the biochemical heavy lifting for every living organism on Earth. With insight and humor, he explains how these miniature engines are built - and how they have been appropriated by and assembled like Lego sets within every creature that walks, swims, or flies. Falkowski shows how evolution works to maintain this core machinery of life, and how we and other animals are veritable conglomerations of microbes.

Great book to appreciate microbes
Revisado: 10-05-15
This was a great listen. The narration was on point, but more importantly, you'll gain a much deeper appreciation for the microbial world that you inhabit. The build up to the profound question of, "are we alone," was well done and offered seemingly viable theories and ideas.

Amazing book!
Revisado: 04-23-13
Where does This Will Make You Smarter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This has to be pretty close to, if not at the top.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I found the section on collective intelligence to be the most interesting.
Any additional comments?
The title really does deliver, but beware, there is a lot of hugely differing ideas in this book that moves very quickly. Take your time reading and processing this, and maybe give it 2 reads. Well worth it.

Historia
In the late 1970s when the government mandated we get the fat out of our food, the food industry responded by pouring more sugar in. The result has been a perfect storm, disastrously altering our biochemistry and driving our eating habits out of our control. To help us lose weight and recover our health, Robert Lustig presents personal strategies to readjust the key hormones that regulate hunger, reward, and stress; and societal strategies to improve the health of the next generation.

Would you consider the audio edition of Fat Chance to be better than the print version?
I didn't read the print version, but the audio edition was great. It was paced well, and captured the humorous portions of the book well.
Any additional comments?
Fat Chance was great. I can't highly recommend it enough. I will say I noticed at least two mistakes. Wellbutrin isn't an SSRI and dextrin is not a sugar. It is a soluble fiber. I actually really found the political discussions intriguing. I've read another review about it stuffing liberal biases in, but I didn't really see that.

Historia
Faced with the ceaseless stream of news about war, crime, and terrorism, one could easily think we live in the most violent age ever seen. Yet as New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows in this startling and engaging new work, just the opposite is true: violence has been diminishing for millennia and we may be living in the most peaceful time in our species's existence.

Comprehensive and well thought out
Revisado: 01-18-13
What made the experience of listening to The Better Angels of Our Nature the most enjoyable?
Pinker does an amazing job weaving together ideas from extremely far ranging fields of psychology, sociology, and biology to present a case that whatever our future in terms of peace and war, statistics would have it that we are progressing towards a more peaceful existence. I found the ideas of humanism and religion to be most compelling and interesting. Will probably give this one another listen as there is lots of information to take in.
