Did not warm to the main character who whined through the whole book. Every single character was a tragic story. Just felt like the book needed a little more balance. It was well written, however, with a great sense of dark humor. I appreciated the book for its qualities, but never looked forward to reading it.

The story’s okay as it goes, but the writing is almost an accomplishment in how many cliches it strings together. Book clubs could have fun making a list. Narrator okay but pronounces interesting—note: a word that occurs often—‘inneresting.” If that bugs you, skip this book.

If you need a mood elevator, this is it. I looked forward to reading it every day and was depressed when it was over. Happily, Uncle Fred appears in many other Wodehouse books. He is joy in a human being. And no one reads Wodehouse like Jonathan Cecil. This particular book is my favorite Wodehouse, and I've read a lot of it.

Wow. So disappointed in Louise Penny. The impossible logistics of this mystery just shatter the suspension of disbelief. SPOILER ALERT: That the petite "killer" could have put the adult male corpse into a wheelbarrow and wheeled it miles through dense woods in the deepest darkness of night...then gone back with the wheelbarrow for a load of goods? Preposterous. Anyone who has tried to move a heavy wheelbarrow over rough terrain even in daylight knows this is ridiculous--never mind through miles of dense woods in absolute darkness.

The writing is luminous, the plotting wonderful as it flits from scene to scene, season to season, but if there is a more depressing novel in print, I'd like to know what it is. Numbingly bleak. The outcome seemed an easy way out for an author shooting for profundity. I appreciated this book but did not enjoy a moment of it.

Interesting but very depressing tale with terrible narration. Male narrator, in particular, a painfully bad actor.

This deeply researched book proves all its points. In fact, you cannot fully understand Trump's confounding behavior toward Russia without it. Highly recommend.

Where does Where'd You Go, Bernadette rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

7 out of 10

What aspect of Kathleen Wilhoite’s performance would you have changed?

It was over the top and she was not good at differentiating many of the voices. She had three basic voices, which didn't work well for a book told in letters written by many different people. That said, she has a fabulous singing voice and used it to great effect when needed.

Any additional comments?

Fresh and fabulous story, beautifully drawn characters, and some really first-rate writing. One major flaw. The story was told through letters and the letters were often not at all believable, which we found distracting. We continually paused the audio and said to one another, "But an educational consultant would never use expletives in a formal communication to a client group he hardly knows." "A psychiatrist would never write a letter like that to a group of parents." If the entire book was full of magical realism, it would have been one thing, but the book was built on a certain authenticity, so we found it difficult to overcome. In the end, the strong points of the book were worth the flaws for us.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. The narration made it impossible for me to stick with this book. The reader was over the top and stilted--cringe-worthy. He mispronounced a number of words and was just wrong for the book. Maybe he'd be good with self-help books, but not literature.

What did you like best about this story?

Terrific story and well written.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator read this as though he was reading a storybook to children. His delivery was just too emotive...I tried to block it out so I could hear the words, but it was too much for me. I want to point out, however, that many Audiobook readers appeared to like the narration, so it just may be a style that doesn't work for me. I like a flatter, quieter reading so that I am hearing the words, not the narrator's PERFORMANCE of them. This narrator was like a very bad actor in a high school play...again, that's how it came off to me. Best to listen to a clip first.

Was The Telling Room worth the listening time?

Not sure. Depends on whether you can accept the narrator's style. Would recommend reading the print version, though. I think it's probably a wonderful book.

We enjoyed every moment of this witty farce. It was well written, skillfully read by Frances McDormand, and fresh and fun from start to finish--while still having the quality of literary fiction. If you want a book that will lighten the cares of the day while keeping your rapt interest, this is the one. A treasure.
