Historia
In September of 1892, Oscar Wilde and his family retreated to the idyllic Norfolk countryside for a holiday. His wife, Constance, has every reason to be happy: two beautiful sons, a stellar reputation as an advocate for progressive causes, and a delightfully charming and affectionate husband and father, who is perhaps the most famous man in England. But as an assortment of houseguests arrive, including an aristocratic young wannabe poet named Lord Alfred Douglas, Constance gradually—and then all at once—comes to see that her husband's heart is elsewhere.

Another Great Bayard Historical Fiction Classic
Revisado: 10-02-24
Whenever I start a Louis Bayard book, my brain wants to automatically classify it with some sort of expectation, thinking in my classic way of Dickens, Poe, or, in this case, Wilde, and I find that Louis goes so completely off into another most unexpectedly delightful direction. He gets us to see a different side of or possibility for the tale. To tell the story from the aspect of Constance and from the two boys, Cyril and Vyvyan, makes us think about the social implications of Oscar’s story as they played havoc on his family members and the people surrounding them even long after Oscar and Constance were physically long gone from this world. Thank you for giving us another wonderful tale. It was a delightful read. Can’t wait to see what you will think of next! ❤️ The narrators were excellent, especially Elisabeth Rodgers whose voice was the perfect match for Constance.

Great Read and Perfect Narration
Revisado: 11-05-23
I have been following Christopher Rice’s career for a long time and can say that I am proud of the progress he has made as a writer. Not many people would be brave or bold enough to tackle the intensity of emotions behind the broad spectrum of characters represented here. This is predominantly a suspense novel, but it also covers explorations in mental disease such as ptsd and it explores the damage we humans can due to each other with prejudice and assumption! There is plenty of homophobia and internalized homophobia as well as other prejudices to go around! Conquering them is a continuous and arduous task that never ends in anyone’s lifetime! There are several losers in this of course, but the winners do not come out undamaged or looking like perfect saints either! They came off as real and legitimate people. Christopher gave some wonderful character development and really got me invested in those characters. I finished listening on an elevated platform in Chicago with tears in my eyes!
Fred Weller had the perfect voice to narrate as John, the marine, in whose voice this tale is told. It did take me back a bit to Fred’s role as US Marshal Marshall Mann in In Plain Sight. And that same voice worked beautifully here! The diction is perfect and I could listen easily anywhere, whether at home or out urban hiking! Fred gets all the intonation and understands the context of each sentence or phrase providing excellent nuances to let us constantly know what is happening! Super job!

A Wonderful Third Installment of Sapphire Cove
Revisado: 03-12-23
Once again C Travis Rice has done a brilliant job in bringing us a story with characters that we can invest in and whose story shows the sometimes difficult and challenging road to love that can occur in all our lives. Living one’s truth can be a rocky road full of traps, but living that truth honestly can also bring great rewards. Loved this tale and cannot wait until we get a fourth installment in the world of Sapphire Cove and it’s lovable cast.

Historia
Born under different stars—Mungo a Protestant and James a Catholic—they should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all. Their environment is a hyper-masculine and sectarian one, for gangs of young men and the violence they might dole out dominate the Glaswegian estate where they live. And yet against all odds Mungo and James become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the pigeon dovecote that James has built for his prize racing birds.

Intense Reading
Revisado: 02-25-23
This book is not really quite the romance I was expecting. It is one of the most intense readings ever. The reason I say it is intense, is because of all of the strong emotions passing through, between and within all of the different characters. In many ways, it really reads like a thriller. The main character of Mungo is superbly drawn out and his story spread out before us. I definitely plan on giving it a bit of time and then a rereading.
The narrator took a bit of getting used to. At first I found him a bit flat, but now having finished the story, I certainly understand why he chose the interpretation that he used. Do not want to elaborate (spoilers).

Love And Forgiveness Is In The Air
Revisado: 02-15-23
As usual, Christopher Travis Rice has come up with a beautiful tale in his Sapphire Universe. The bully turned lover might be unbelievable if, and only if, I had not experienced something mightily similar in my own life! Amazing how lives change as we age and mature over the years! Bullies can indeed become buddies and besties years later as our souls learn to accept ourselves and we realize that all we had before were childish prejudices and anger. Like Naser and Mason, we gain the ability to learn, to forgive, and to accept that the past is the past and that the future can be different if we are willing to give up the anger and learn to forgive.
The story is smooth and the characters are likable. Our bully Mason matures and his spirit expands to be able to love the man he has loved his entire life. As well, our hero Naser learns to forgive and accept love from the man who treated him so badly before.
What I especially loved about this story is that it seamlessly weaves in characters from the previous story without making the current tale all about the earlier characters. It makes the story more real and allows us to envelope ourselves into this Sapphire universe that Rice has created.
Can't wait for the next in the Sapphire series!
