Historia
Admired by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dorothy Parker, and Dashiell Hammett, and hailed as one of the best 100 English-language novels by Time magazine, The Day of the Locust continues to influence American writers, artists, and culture. Bob Dylan wrote the classic song "Day of the Locusts" in homage, and Matt Groening's Homer Simpson is named after one of its characters. No novel more perfectly captures the nuttier side of Hollywood. Here the lens is turned on its fringes-actors out of work, film extras with big dreams, and parents lining their children up for small roles.

Why is this a classic LA story?
Revisado: 07-22-23
I must have missed something. This book leaves a lot to be desired but of course Grover Gardner does his best to acquit the story with a solid narration.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

I really loved this book and reading
Revisado: 05-06-23
As usual the narration is excellent but Anthony Doerr's story comes together masterfully. This book is true artistry and one of my favorites of the last 10 years.

Should come with a sadness warning
- De KJH en 03-16-22
Well read but story is underwhelming
Revisado: 05-06-23
This book is interesting and creative but it is obsessively sad and focused on death. I would also say the St Elsewhere like ending is disappointing and a sort of deus ex machina copout that should not be in the repertoire of a bestselling author. Would not recommend other than the voice acting which never ceases to impress me.

Historia
Working from exclusive inside reporting, New Yorker writer Nicholas Schmidle tells the remarkable story of the test pilots, engineers, and visionaries behind Virgin Galactic’s campaign to build a space tourism company. Schmidle follows a handful of characters - Mark Stucky, Virgin’s lead test pilot; Richard Branson, the eccentric billionaire funding the venture; Mike Moses, the grounded, unflappable president; Mike Alsbury, the test pilot killed in a fatal crash; and others - in pursuit of their collective goal: to make space tourism a reality.

Unexpectedly good
Revisado: 01-17-22
What I thought was a story about test pilots transforms into a wonderful reflection on fathers and sons and efforts to “push the envelope.”. Although not as high profile, this is every bit as good as THE RIGHT STUFF.

Historia
Although Thomas Alva Edison was the most famous American of his time, and remains an international name today, he is mostly remembered only for the gift of universal electric light. His invention of the first practical incandescent lamp 140 years ago so dazzled the world - already reeling from his invention of the phonograph and dozens of other revolutionary devices - that it cast a shadow over his later achievements. In all, this near-deaf genius patented 1,093 inventions, not including others, such as the X-ray fluoroscope, that he left unlicensed for the benefit of medicine.

Unnecessarily in reverse
Revisado: 09-03-21
A decent enough biography but Edmund Morris felt compelled to craft it in reverse chronological order. All I can say is that there is a reason biography isn’t written like this. It deflects from the story.

Historia
In a narrative as beguiling and mysterious as memory itself - shadowed and luminous at once - we follow the story of 14-year-old Nathaniel, and his older sister, Rachel. In 1945, just after World War II, they stay behind in London when their parents move to Singapore, leaving them in the care of a mysterious figure named The Moth. They suspect he might be a criminal, and they grow both more convinced and less concerned as they come to know his eccentric crew of friends: men and women joined by a shared history of unspecified service during the war.

Very mediocre offering
Revisado: 03-18-19
Fairly clear to me that this was an effort by an already established writer coasting off previous successes. The book is ephemeral, dreamy, and feels though it's been written on the fly without a coherent or particularly tight plot, jumping around in time and point of view. At one point the third person limited narrator who has been tracking Nathan switches in mid-flight to another character. And Ondaatje employs a writer's tic that bothers me: "He frequently thought of how" such and such "made him feel" instead of simply describing the feeling in the present moment. To his credit, Ondaatje has a talent, and I purchased this audiobook because the story was intriguing, but I found myself wanting to return it 3/4 of the way in (tempting).

Very detailed guide -- a bit too much
Revisado: 12-12-18
Probably need to have a pre-existing practice going before reading this book. I think Yates gives a detailed description of perhaps his path and some other individuals' paths, but I think he makes it a bit too complex (when you start wondering whether you are experiencing "subtle dullness" or "subtle progressive dullness", you probably are missing the mark). There were a lot of useful nuggets in here, but might make your head spin in the process.
