Historia
With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and labor-saving technologies like self-checkouts and automated factories, the future of work has never been more uncertain, and even jobs requiring high levels of human interaction are no longer safe. The Last Human Job explores the human connections that underlie our work, arguing that what people do for each other in these settings is valuable and worth preserving.

Great content. The author’s reading is fine too. But the canned audio is highly distracting.

Solid sci-fi
Revisado: 10-01-22
Nothing fancy here. Just a fun, solid sci-fi story, much like a Peter Hamilton book without the cringe. Mispronunciations in the narration didn’t bother me, and while it’s not the best, it’s also not the worst. I’ll definitely be picking up more books in this series anytime I want something engaging & easy to dive into.

Reads like a modern novel
Revisado: 07-15-22
I was surprised at how engaging the story is. For a nineteenth century book, it reads like modern adventure. Excellent narration helps, of course. Really a wonderfully told story with a nice message.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Baffling, entertaining
Revisado: 05-10-22
For a book grounded in necromancy, the characters sure are afraid of death. That’s it. The premise is perplexing. Otherwise, it’s a fun twist on a murder mystery.

A self-help Davinci Code
Revisado: 04-13-22
As a story, The Celestine Prophecy falls short of it’s hype. The characters are poorly developed, the ending just happens suddenly, and it’s problematically Eurocentric (all Peruvians are bad, all white foreigners good). But the audio version is nicely narrated with well-placed sound effects, making it very “readable.” The ideas behind the story are worth considering, but aren’t necessarily illustrated well through character action. Instead there are long passages of explaining “the manuscript.” But if it’s the ideas you’re after, you might do better picking up a self-help book.

The characters actually change in Judas Unchained. Especially Melanie. Otherwise, it’s a typical Peter Hamilton book, as much soap opera as space opera.

Wonderful story, weird premise
Revisado: 03-28-22
Excellent story with a terrible, nonsensical premise. There’s a thousand holes in the Scythes idea but Shusterman is such damned good writer he made it work. Just ignore all the reality checks you want to make and enjoy the ride.

Slow
Revisado: 03-28-22
While it picks up about halfway through, and nicely develops his traveling companions, an AI and a doctor, it then ends as the book peaks. Unfortunately, I can’t call this a cliffhanger. Just an aborted ending I don’t care to finish.

Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

Audio a little hard to follow
Revisado: 12-08-21
I definitely missed some details, as it’s not the most fluid plot, but half my attention was on another task. The overarching story was easy enough to get and it had an interesting reveal near the end. I especially enjoyed the humor element, something I didn’t expect from such a reputable book. The performance was good, but sounded a little like the narrator was speaking through a can. A good book to read for understanding the origins of cyberpunk.

Best book in the most engaging series
Revisado: 11-14-21
Well, I’m sad I reached the end. This book really added a layer of symbolism not pronounced in the previous two, which deepened the characters in completely unexpected ways. I’ll be carrying these stories with me for a while.
