Historia
At the request (well, it wasn't really a request) of his employers, Augusten lands in rehab, where his dreams of group therapy with Robert Downey Jr. are immediately dashed by grim reality of fluorescent lighting and paper hospital slippers. When Augusten is forced to examine himself, he finds himself in the worst trouble of all. Because when his thirty days are up, he has to return to his same drunken Manhattan life - and live it sober. Dry is the story of love, loss, and Starbucks as a Higher Power

It is good but predictable. Wealthy big city gay goes thru the difficulties of rock bottom with some wry humor.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.

Good but not perfect
Revisado: 01-10-25
It’s a story about breaking the cycle of abuse. The characters are a bit cliched but what didn’t work was the need for all the people to be Harvard educated or at the top of success. As such it felt the people unreachable. The main characters emerging maturity adds much to the story.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

Boring book of an extreme successful athlete and nave seal
Revisado: 04-05-24
Up front, I don’t run in circles with navy seals or adrenaline junkies. Book is about an Olympic level athlete with an Olympic sized ego and an always present drive to do more. Any chapter is a testament to his ego and any chapter is as good as the next. Can read or listen to a five minute excerpt to get the idea of the book. A great read for other adrenaline junkies but very meh for those not driven to conquer and be better than others.

As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Good but not great
Revisado: 05-10-22
Native American spirituality taught by a professor. It is quite interesting at times and quite repetitive in others. The authors voice at once soothing but at the same time annoying. I learned quite a bit from listening to this book. I also think it sentimentalizes Native American ways of life. A good listen but with caveats.

Historia
The growth of Christianity in the early centuries of the Common Era is one of the most extraordinary stories in world history. What began with a preaching day laborer and his dozen or so disciples soon grew to be the largest religion in the world, eventually taking over the entire Roman Empire. How did that happen? How was such a movement possible?

An extremely excellent course
Revisado: 04-28-22
This is one of Ehrman’s great works. Not the critical thinking effort of many of his works but how did this religion captivate and shape modern western civilization. He does this quite fairly, each lecture is fascinating and well planned out. If you have any interest in this subject, this book is very highly recommended.

Historia
The Jungle is the story of Jurgis Rudkus, a Slavic immigrant who marries frail Ona Lukoszaite and seeks security and happiness as a workman in the Chicago stockyards. Once there, he is abused by foremen, his meager savings are filched by real estate sharks, and at every turn he is plagued by the misfortunes arising from poverty, poor working conditions, and disease. Finally, in accordance with Sinclair’s own creed, Rudkus turns to socialism as a way out.

Socialist propaganda
Revisado: 02-25-22
The misery of capitalism just keeps coming. Whining and more undermining the argument of socialism. Simplistic moralizing. I’m sympathetic to some goals of socialism but this book was both well written yet tiresome. Also highly racist with many two dimensional characters.

Well read, not to deep Theologically
Revisado: 02-18-22
Ok, fessing up, I was raised Catholic but as one parent is Protestant, I was given a choice and went in that direction. Father Schmitz is an excellent and enthusiastic reader of scripture. He is very much a gee shucks and golly gee kind of guy and easy to listen to. From a theological point of view, he keeps it simple and doesn't engage with parts of scripture that are problematic. Politically, he is quite conservative as his speeches at the right to life rallies will attest. For people who've never read or can't get thru the bible this podcast is great. If you've been around scripture for awhile or maybe have taught Bible Studies it is not too deep.
