Historia
The history of the Episcopal Church is intimately bound up with the history of empire. The two grew in tandem in the modern era, and as they grew they developed particular ideologies and practices around race. As slavery was carried over into the new political formations of the United States, so too were racially based exclusions carried over in the Episcopal Church. Mission, Race, and Empire presents a new history of the Episcopal Church from its origins in the early British Empire up to the present, told through the lenses of empire and race.

The great people's history
Revisado: 07-27-24
I have read numerous histories of the Episcopal Church. So many are placed in the context of buildings and events. What I appreciated about this one was that it was placed in the context of people. I have already recommended this book to a number of colleagues as a wonderful way to understand the broader context of people in the history of the Episcopal Church.

Historia
For most of the last hundred years, Biloxi was known for its beaches, resorts, and seafood industry. But it had a darker side. It was also notorious for corruption and vice, everything from gambling, prostitution, bootleg liquor, and drugs to contract killings. The vice was controlled by small cabal of mobsters, many of them rumored to be members of the Dixie Mafia.

Meh.
Revisado: 10-13-23
There is minimal storyline or character development. This reads more like a poor history timeline than a fictional novel. it lacks a cohesiveness I would expect from Grisham.

Historia
Before Indian casinos sprouted up around the country, a few enterprising tribes got their start in gambling by opening bingo parlors. A group of women on the Oneida Indian Reservation just outside Green Bay, Wisconsin, introduced bingo in 1976 simply to pay a few bills. Bingo not only paid the light bill at the struggling civic center but was soon financing vital health and housing services for tribal elderly and poor.

An Excellent Historical Overview
Revisado: 12-05-21
While the the subject of the book is the impact of Bingo on the Oneida, as someone well familiar with the history I found the summary of the Oneida history to be an even better reason to recommend the book. The context established touches on almost every nuance in a way that allows the reader to have a broad understanding and the ability to research further, if so desired.

Historia
In the long history of American demagogues from Huey Long to Donald Trump, never has one man caused so much damage in such a short time as Senator Joseph McCarthy. We still use "McCarthyism" to stand for outrageous charges of guilt by association, a weapon of polarizing slander. From 1950 to 1954, McCarthy destroyed many careers and even entire lives, whipping the nation into a frenzy of paranoia, accusation, loyalty oaths, and terror. When the public finally turned on him, he came crashing down, dying of alcoholism in 1957.

Forceful personality, New insights
Revisado: 08-02-20
It is good to get beyond what I learned about McCarthy in school. As is often the case, there is a more than just catch phrases. The tragedy of this man with so much potential, so much drive, so much ability, to focus that energy in ways that were so offensive to so many people, is clearly spelled out in this book. The observations of his downfall coming more from how he went about things, rather than what he was focusing on, give excellent insight that can be used today. Having access to records previously restricted, including his personal papers, really fills out the story in ways that previously were not able to be shared. This is a solid read, and worth the time period
