Historia
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Historia
The one thing you never talk about while you’re in the Scholomance is what you’ll do when you get out. Not even the richest enclaver would tempt fate that way. But it’s all we dream about: the hideously slim chance we’ll survive to make it out the gates and improbably find ourselves with a life ahead of us, a life outside the Scholomance halls. And now the impossible dream has come true. I’m out, we’re all out. We saved everyone. So much for my great-grandmother’s prophecy of doom and destruction. Ha, only joking! Actually, it’s gone all wrong.

So good
Revisado: 02-06-23
I’ve been a fan of Novik since her first book many years ago so I am predisposed to like her work. This series is a dramatic departure from her other work in perspective, story line and type. It is unique, unexpected and her main character is an interesting surprising mix of prickles and hope.
The narrator is a perfect voice for the story- she is deft with different characters, catches the heart of characters clearly and is great to listen to.
Loved the series and am sad this is it!!

Original , nail biting, strong characters
Revisado: 01-28-23
As a fantasy addicted reader it is rare to find a story wholly original, with characters you may not always like but are believable and interesting. Also, 9th House and this sequel do not fall into the rut of many stories in this genre- the main characters are strong and do not have to have a romance to drive the story.
I also appreciate Bardugo’s honest depiction of tough young women, trying to make the most of their lives and making decisions that are hard and often wrong. This series is a great read and I can’t wait to see where the author will go next.
The narrators are both excellent. Their range with the characters is impressive- you can hear wry wit and anger, compassion and fear and each character has a unique identifiable voice. Well done.

Revisado: 03-17-22
I watched the new Eye of the World Series starring Rosalind Pike and it was good but it seemed changed from my memory of the book so I thought I’d give it another read. I had the option of getting the version narrated by Pike. I’m so glad I did. She did an amazing job. Her performance was well paced and her depiction of the characters kept me completely engrossed.
The story is as excellent as the first time I read it- I hope Pike narrates more in the series.

Excellent all round
Revisado: 01-28-21
I love Mark Lawrence’s stories. This one is especially good- the characters are not stereotypes, the story is always interesting and it is seeded with whimsical touches throughout. I want more of Jarl and his best Viking friend.
And of course Tim Gerard Reynolds does an excellent job acting the many characters- he is an artist.

Revisado: 11-23-20
This book drew me in and held me till the last syllable. The story was original and the characters never did what I might expect.
The narrator, Julia Emelin, was the perfect person to tell the story. Had I read the book, I’d never have imagined the nuanced performance or her lovely accent.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

Excellent!
Revisado: 11-15-20
Naomi Novik keeps getting better and better. There is nothing predictable in this book. The story and the characters unfold as the story relentlessly moves forward. I love that the young protagonist was thoughtful, vulnerable and tough without being stereotypical. She’s also rude and prickly but from her perspective, this behavior is understandable and she sees it herself as a survival strategy. All the children in this terrible place have to survive somehow!
The narrator, Anisha Dadia, is perfect.
Waiting for the next book.

Historia
The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

Lively and lovely
Revisado: 11-13-20
I did not expect to be drawn in as quickly or completely to this book as I was. Holmberg crafted a world and characters that are clear without feeling over-explained. The story is fast paced and twists in unexpected ways.
I read criticisms of the narrator, Joel Froomkin. I found both narrators easy to listen to and felt Elizabeth Knowelden did an especially good job finding her character’s voice.
I can’t wait for the next book!

The name's Fetch Phillips - what do you need? Cover a Gnome with a crossbow while he does a dodgy deal? Sure. Find out who killed Lance Niles, the big-shot businessman who just arrived in town? I'll give it shot. Help an old-lady Elf track down her husband's murderer? That's right up my alley. What I don't do, because it's impossible, is search for a way to bring the goddamn magic back.

Had to know what happened...
Revisado: 11-03-20
This is a story about two sides of a conflict and a “traitor” as the main character. It’s tough to do that in a way that allows a reader to both doubt and root for him. Arnold does that here in a unique setting with characters that make the story even better.
The author is the narrator and he knows Fetch perfectly. Well done!

Heart wrenching, swashbuckling, funny adventure
Revisado: 05-26-20
I’ve listened to this series twice and have found more to love each time. It’s an adventure with imperfect heroes (sorry Brasti), good friends who are pressed to their ragged edges and new enigmatic enemies.
Sebastien de Castell has created a compelling world, characters whose lives I’m completely invested in and problems that need clever committed heroes. Also- you may need some Kleenex for this one.
Joe Jameson brings the characters to life - it’s magic and keeps me coming back.
