No one knows if the story is true, but several locals seem to share Fitchett's interest in the wooden bird with the sapphire eye. Any one of them could be the next victim. One of them is definitely the killer.

This book is a page turner (or whatever the equivalent term is for a book one listens to on Audible). Fascinating plot, vivid descriptions of the landscape and characters, interesting human dynamics. Particularly liked the author’s adept change in phrasing and tone between the 1700s and now.
