Charles Puccia here gives us a panoramic view of a segment of the lives of a group of unique and interesting characters. While some listeners may prefer their stories to be primarily plot-driven, I personally enjoyed the several "detours" that took place during the course of the novel. And at the very least, we now have a very clear idea of what the word "stenolagnia" means and how it pretty much affects the lives and relationships of at least 3 of the main characters.

Since I always have a "soft spot" for the so-called villains in a story, I especially enjoyed the way Bill is presented, even with his coarse laughter which, in fact, emerged as an outstanding feature in Derrick McClain's always excellent narration. And while I found that the focus seemed to linger perhaps for too long a period of time on some of the sex scenes, the writing per se was exemplary.

All in all, if after reading and/or listening to a book, I find myself looking forward to the next installment in the series, it's definitely one that I would recommend, especially since I found the bittersweet ending to the whole novel to be quite touching.

Just about everybody I know has either had problems with alcohol addiction or at least been close to someone who had similar struggles, be they with alcohol, illegal drugs, smoking, or over-eating (just to name a few). In a sense, the advice given in this book can be applied, with some modifications, to those other addictions as well.

I would say that what makes this book especially compelling is the excellent narration. David Van Der Molen is able to sound serious and urgent without lapsing into a heckling or superior tone or manner, so that he creates a strong impression of being genuinely concerned about putting across the author's message and instructions.

Well worth an hour of one's time -- and maybe even a life-saver for those who may be struggling with their addition.

As a lifelong fan of bizarre television programs such as "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits" and, more recently, "Black Mirror" (as seen on Netflix), I'm usually drawn to tales that represent a significant departure from the humdrum, middle-of-the-road type of fare that seems to attract the majority of viewers, listeners, readers, etc. And while I would never shy away from taking on a huge, sprawling saga (I actually read "War & Peace" when I was in my teens), there's something to be said for the pleasures to be had from digesting materials in smaller installments.

The stories contained in this uniquely entertaining collection are varied enough to sustain one's interest, and while few people would probably rate them all on the same level, either quality-wise or entertainment-wise, these particular stories maintain a remarkable consistency of excellence from one to the other.

My heading suggests that so-called surprise endings predominate, although I confess that there was at least one story here whose ending I could foresee. At the same time, "The Technicians" did, in fact, have me somewhat stupefied as to what direction the whole tale would take me in -- so much so that, when that unforgettable ending did come, I almost wish I hadn't seen it coming in those last few seconds leading up to it.

In other words, there are some dark, unsettling aspects to some of these stories, "Return to the Dirt" being a prime example. There's also plenty of humor which comes through quite frequently, thanks to the excellence of narrators Paul J. McSorley & "company." Occasional adult language/content wasn't severe enough to offend anyone, save those readers/listeners who may gravitate towards more PG-rated materials in the first place.

In the final analysis, this is one audiobook that is several cuts above average, and I can state with confidence that Geoff Sturtevant is an author whom we should all keep an eye on. Hopefully, he'll have more wonderfully over-the-top material to share with us in the future!
