Historia
Charles Warren, Los Angeles attorney, has dedicated his career to aiding people in financial straits. He is particularly skilled at the art of recovering assets that have been embezzled or hidden. In his newest case, helping a beautiful young widow find the money missing from her late husband's investment accounts, Charlie recognizes a familiar scheme—one that echoes the con job that targeted his own widowed mother many years before, and that led him, as a teenager, to commit a crime of retribution that still weighs on his conscience.

Revisado: 04-09-25
Thomas Perry is great, the best writer working in this genre by far, This book proves that he is still at the top of his game.
But I desperately hope he chooses a different narrator for his next book. This narrator cannot do a woman's voice, So instead he gives the women's parts a weird intonation, often completely unsuitable to the context and mood of the scene. By the end, it almost ruined the book for me.

Who are we? How do scientists define Homo sapiens, and how does our species differ from the extinct hominins that came before us? In this accessible account palaeoarchaeologist Paul Pettitt shows how the latest scientific advances, especially in genetics, are revolutionizing our understanding of human evolution. Pettitt reveals the extraordinary story of how our ancestors adapted to unforgiving and relentlessly changing climates, leading to remarkable innovations in art, technology, and society that we are only now beginning to comprehend.

Very disappointing. Skip this.
Revisado: 09-11-24
A cell has DNA.A discussion of what evolution is. Homo sapiens originated in Africa. If you know absolutely nothing about anything this book may be informative. But if you are really interested in recent advancements in genetics for example, there are much, much better books.
And the author seems to think his "colorful" expressions, his anecdotes about his career and the scientists he knows make the book interesting, His writing style is insipid and distracting.
A total waste of time. Hoping I can return this.

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

This book and the first volume will probably be read for many decades if not centuries as a remarkable account of one of the great wars of human history. I have listened to hundreds of audio books, and have never heard a performance better than that of the narrator of this book.

Other than the bullet lodged less than a centimeter from his heart, former Detroit police officer Alex McKnight thought he had put the nightmare of his partner's death and his own near-fatal injury behind him. After all, Maximilian Rose, convicted of the crimes, has been locked in the state pen for years. But in the small town of Paradise, Michigan, where McKnight has traded his badge for a cozy cabin in the woods, a murderer with Rose's unmistakable trademarks appears to be back to his killing ways.

Believe the bad reviews.
Revisado: 03-11-23
I wish I had read the reviews before wasting a credit on this awful book. I have read every book by John Conroe including the Zone War series. But I will never buy another book with the name "John Conroe" on the cover.
It started subpar and just got worse and worse until I finally quit reading. I can't believe that this book was written by the same person as the others. I would call this book boring trash, but it's actually worse than that.
Narrator does a great job, as usual.

A Christmas Carol is a novella by English author Charles Dickens first published by Chapman and Hall and first released on 19 December 1843. The story tells of sour and stingy Ebenezer Scrooge's ideological, ethical, and emotional transformation after the supernatural visitations of Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Yet to Come.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I already gave this audio book to my sister as a gift. Why? It was Christmas! And she was, like me, an English major, and is, like me, a Simon Vance fan.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Christmas Carol?
When Scrooge wakes up and realizes that only a night has passed, and it is Christmas Day, and he is re-born.
What does Simon Vance bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is the best narrator that I have ever heard. He reads books better out loud than I can hear them in my mind when I read them.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When the spirit throws back at Scrooge his words about 'decreasing the surplus population'. I frequently read comments on places like Huffpost and Yahoo by people who believe in the 'population explosion' and population control and who think we have too many children and that more should not be born and many of those living should die. They do not even know that heartless, ignorant people were saying the same things 150 years ago when the world's population was a small fraction of today's.
Any additional comments?
Any person who thinks they know the real story of Ebenezer Scrooge because they have seen one or more of the many cinematic versions should, nay MUST!, hear the real story of Scrooge as read in this audio book.

Just another brilliant Aubrey/Maturin story
Revisado: 02-25-13
Would you listen to The Fortune of War again? Why?
I will probably listen to the whole series again someday, starting again with the first one. O'Brien is a brilliant novelist by any measure and any standards, taking the sub-genre invented by CS Forrester to another level.
Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Simon Vance is as good as it gets for the narration of novels. There may be a few who are sometimes as good, but nobody I have heard is better. You quickly forget that he is 'just' a narrator, and you hear the voices of the different characters in 'their' voices. Amazing really.
