there was a lot less tension and suspense and action in this novel compared to the 1st 3. a little too much character relationship dialogue.

Boring.
Revisado: 08-16-24
This storyline was drawn out & very confusing. the narration was very very boring. I never felt any emotion, including annoyance, I just kept waiting for the story to start but it never did. and yet somehow all the words leading to something still managed to feel forced & rushed. also the plot is so disjointed in an unstrategic way.

Good story, Fantastic narrator
Revisado: 07-26-24
The narrator was fabulous. I listened to this book like 3 times. I thought it was very goid and really well read. if only all narrators could be so proficient. I quite enjoyed this tale also, it was unique, well fleshed out, I felt I was in the icy cold, dark north, I was curious, I liked the characters and I was thoroughly creeper out. I don't know how this works but the "item" of concern really freaked me out. I may have developed a phobia of someone else's paranoia!

Historia
Who are the Sawkill Girls? Marion: The newbie. Awkward and plain, steady and dependable. Zoey: The pariah. Luckless and lonely, hurting but hiding it. Aching with grief and dreaming of vanished girls. Val: The queen bee. Their stories come together on the island of Sawkill Rock, where gleaming horses graze in rolling pastures and cold waves crash against black cliffs. Where kids whisper the legend of an insidious monster at parties and around campfires. Where girls have been disappearing for decades, stolen away by a ravenous evil no one has dared to fight…until now.

Tiresome.
Revisado: 05-20-24
I can't decide if the narrator made this ok, good at times book, cringey and almost unbearable at times, or if the writing gave the narrator no other choice, but it was both. Sometimes the reading was very good, there were moments where I felt drawn in, intrigued, suspenseful and then the characters would dialogue with eachother. Teenagers don't talk like this. No human talks like this. This writer has potential but the dialogue needs polishing. It was unrealistic, cringey, and at times tiresome. The narrator needs to drop the whiney over-exaggerated pitch during dramatic moments and also refine when a scene's dialogue calls for yelling, she really hurt my ears at times. I stuck through this because of the parts that were decent but almost couldn't finish more than once.

Historia
Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Excruciating
Revisado: 08-02-23
I'll start out positive, the mystery within this story might be intriguing and captivating for a reader looking for those elements. I was looking for more supernatural horror and suspense which this book was not. On top of that the writing was ridiculous. I could give example after example but I'll just summarize by saying that for me personally by chapter w I knew I couldn't finish this book, and it was going for $23!!! wth.
the main character was contradiction on contradiction moment from moment, the text was filled with unnecessary and unbelievable commentary. Thin plot, predictable, redundant, and om pretty sure the author re-wrote an entire scene from the movie Titanic into this book. Does that just make this fanfic?
With 5hrs left in the story, I quit and all I feel is annoyed and frustrated by the stupid characters. The reader has a soothing voice and decent inflections but when the dialogue flows unnaturally and the characters constantly have contradictory and unrealistic conversations, I think it's difficult to find a true voice to read this in. This novel needs a lot of polishing and tidying up as to who the main characters actually are.

I really enjoyed this series
Revisado: 10-23-22
I initially downloaded this read as a rec by audible while looking for some lighter supernatural horror/suspense and listened to it over the course of a road trip.
I have read 5 star horror books (IT) but I'm also a big fan of lighter stuff, and while this story contains darker elements like the occult and gruesome death, it somehow reads lighter overall.
These are also quick reads and not the time spanning detailed novels like the aforementioned 5 star book, but I really enjoyed the story overall and so downloaded the other 2 books in the series. The main character of this book had a couple moments but overall was not super whiny or annoying as seems to be the trend lately.

Gorgeous, Unique Storytelling
Revisado: 10-12-22
This book was a beautiful surprise. I saw many reviews stating it was wordy and plotless, but the mixed in positive reviews were so passionate that I decided to take a break from my supernatural thriller and horror streak and delve into this. This book is written almost lyrically, the plot is highly unique, and the descriptive writing had me completely engrossed in the world building, I felt like I was "there" in many scenes. I can see how this book is not for everyone, it is not a Michael Bay lens flared action packed adventure but the plot is in motion in such a bigger way that it is hard to see until the end and yet you will be too busy devouring the intricate descriptions of every moments details to mind. I personally love everything about this book, a vibrant love story, uniquely fabled, a classic in its own genre.

**SPOILERS**
I was really grabbed by the opening of this book, which is never tied back in or paid off. very confusing. the end twist is VERY circumstantial and hard to believe and this was after drawing out the story for way too long. there were some interesting moments where plot picked up pace but again i felt like just as potential was about to be realized it would be consistently dropped.
