Historia
Most of us have a limited understanding of the powerful role economics has played in shaping human civilization. This makes economic history - the study of how civilizations structured their environments to provide food, shelter, and material goods - a vital lens through which to think about how we arrived at our present, globalized moment. Designed to fill a long-empty gap in how we think about modern history, these 48 lectures are a comprehensive journey through more than 600 years of economic history.

Great Courses...NOT!
- De P. Smith en 01-12-17
a boring rendition of an exciting topic
Revisado: 12-23-16
What would have made An Economic History of the World since 1400 better?
The story is incomplete: an economic history of the "world" cannot ignore the Byzantine empire's role during the European middle ages...
The story is inaccurate: at some point Prof. Harreld apparently ignores that the term boubonic (plague) comes from the Greek word βουβων meaning groin. Please check your facts.
The story also manages to be boring (and confusing): when I reached the chapter on the European economy after the Black Death, I got lost in an endless sermon of some commodity prices going up and some going down, land prices in some areas going up and in others down, and blah blah blah. At that point I stopped reading and returned the book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment.

Historia
The measure of the executive, Peter Drucker reminds us, is the ability to "get the right things done". This usually involves doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is unproductive. Intelligence, imagination, and knowledge may all be wasted in an executive job without the acquired habits of mind that mold them into results. Drucker identifies five practices essential to business effectiveness that can and must be learned.

this is so dated...

Any additional comments?
I felt that the book doesn't cut it for an executive that faces the challenges of a distributed corporation in a highly connected "flat" world. I can see how this book may have had an impact 30 years ago, however the effectiveness principles stated are by now obvious (even though still not always understood).

not worth the time

What disappointed you about Get Her on Board?
Shallow and very condescending to "wives".Not just disappointing but unbearable. I returned it after the first few chapters.

Historia
Join cruising legends Lin and Larry Pardey as from England they proceed into the Baltic, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Germany. During their voyage they dealt with armed guards on the Polish waterfront who watched while the people greeted them with flowers and fruit. They weathered a fierce mast-under broach in a Baltic gale. And experienced great friendships found in harbors large and small.

light story, painful narration
Revisado: 07-27-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
the usual for a reader of pardey's adventures story-telling: light, simple, easy listening
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the numerous snapshots of life in small ports in the UK, Scandinavia and the Iberian peninsula.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was painful to hear. The poor woman decided (or was asked) to render dialogs with foreigners in voice and accent imitations that were border-line insulting. Imagine old Englishmen speaking like decrepit morons, north Europeans speaking like a Mel Brooks parody of Nazis and easter Europeans speaking like KGB agents in cold war spy movies...
