In nine short stories, seven of which have never previously been available in print, and one brand-new, never-before-seen Sherlock Holmes mystery - available together for the first time - Laurie R. King blends her long-running brand of crime fiction with historical treats and narrative sleight of hand.

These stories always take me back
Revisado: 11-01-18
The best part of the Russell Holmes chronicles are the early days so these stories fill in some blanks and take us back to early days, weaving in details from previous books.
King’s descriptions always remove me from my present drudgery driving to work and take me to some other land that I wish I could visit. Wonderful!

Historia
With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

I loved how he interwove the two stories. He is a survivor and gives hope to other victims of domestic violence. Wonderful listen!

Historia
Born just fifteen months apart, Subhash and Udayan Mitra are inseparable brothers, one often mistaken for the other in the Calcutta neighborhood where they grow up. But they are also opposites, with gravely different futures ahead. It is the 1960s, and Udayan—charismatic and impulsive—finds himself drawn to the Naxalite movement, a rebellion waged to eradicate inequity and poverty; he will give everything, risk all, for what he believes.

Most beautiful book I have read in a long time.
Revisado: 10-18-13
What did you love best about The Lowland?
The language is overwhelming. It is like poetry. That, along with an excellent narrator made this book unforgettable and immensely pleasurable to read. It had a good story, gave good depth to the characters providing their many perspectives and left you constantly considering their motives and desires.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The main character had infinite capacity for caring for his child and redefined the word father for me. Still , he was credible while constantly striving to do the right thing.
What about Sunil Malhotra’s performance did you like?
He did all of the different voices well, men, women and especially children! He had excellent material to work with but made the reading seamless. The wonderful language and descriptions in the book are particularly poignant when read by this excellent narrator. I usually listen at a speed of 1.25 but this book I set at 1 so I could really savor the reading.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The ending, gives us hope as a main character lets go of a lifetime of resentment, demonstrating the largeness of human nature and it's capability for forgiveness.
Any additional comments?
This was the best book I have read in many years. It is a saga with great characters, again demonstrating the immigrant experience, but more importantly showing the wonderful side of human behavior. The language is a delight to listen to, describing both physical characteristics as well as human. Jumpa Lahiri is one of the truly great writers of our time. This is a book to be savored.

Historia
In a strange room in Morocco, Mary Russell is trying to solve a pressing mystery: Who am I? She has awakened with shadows in her mind, blood on her hands, and soldiers pounding on the door. Out in the hivelike streets, she discovers herself strangely adept in the skills of the underworld, escaping through alleys and rooftops, picking pockets and locks. She is clothed like a man, and armed only with her wits and a scrap of paper containing a mysterious Arabic phrase. Overhead, warplanes pass ominously north.

Laurie R King back on track
Revisado: 09-28-12
Would you listen to Garment of Shadows again? Why?
I had enjoyed all of the Russell titles until the last which was far below the rest in terms of story, tone and general interest. I was ready to give up the series. However, this one is as good as the rest. My interest was maintained by the intricate plot, including the presence of Holmes in more of the story. The descriptions of historical foreign lands take me away during my daily commute.
What did you like best about this story?
The relationship between Holmes and Russell is always fun and the author has always shown the more humanistic side to Sherlock Holmes which I enjoy. I also love the description of exotic lands and lifestyles of Morocco between the wars.
Which scene was your favorite?
Any scene with the Russell- Holmes combo.

Historia
The Presidents Club was born at Eisenhower’s inauguration when Harry Truman and Herbert Hoover first conceived the idea. Over the years that followed - and to this day - the presidents relied on, misunderstood, sabotaged, and formed alliances with one another that changed history. The world’s most exclusive fraternity is a complicated place: its members are bound forever because they sat in the Oval Office and know its secrets, yet they are immortal rivals for history’s favor.

Great to relive this history
Revisado: 06-05-12
Where does The Presidents Club rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best histories I have listened to because of the personal characterization it brought to our modern presidencies. I have relived the history of my youth with details that were not known to the public at that time in order to illustrate the relationships ex-presidents have with current presidents. It gives you a new outlook on presidents you thought you knew.
