Promising premise, dreadful narration, not my cup of tea.

The narration is distractingly awful that it makes it difficult to really get into the story.
The premise showed promise, but the way the narrator speaks makes it feel like you are always waiting. She makes Casey come off very whiny, and not credible as a character.
The author doesn't set up the backstory in a believable way, so it all ends up feeling like too much of a coincidence. The Christian subtext was not my cup of tea, and I didn't realize it was a Christian fiction novel at the outset. I felt that there were too many preachy moments during the novel to really enjoy it from a non-religious viewpoint.
The note from the author at the end was just ridiculous and had nothing to do with the book series.
Might give the remainder of the series a listen for completion, but not if Nan Hurley is the narrator.

Heavy in the middle, but good start and end

The story itself is fairly good. For those who haven't read loads of mystery or thriller novels, the ending was quite a surprise. Perhaps if I had been reading rather than listening to the book, I might have caught on sooner. The repetitiveness of the narration masks the surprise at the end with her tone throughout the novel. My biggest complaint is that the middle 2/3's of the story is so drawn out and repetitive. I found myself tiring of it and wanting to skim ahead. If I had been reading the book, I'm sure I would have skipped some pages. Perhaps it's partly the fault of the narration, she made a great effort, but her tone was so repetitive and I found myself getting greatly annoyed. Cass was just so grating at times. Each time she cried out for Matthew I cringed. The final 2.5 hours really drew me back into the story and I couldn't wait to see what would happen. The very end left me a little dissatisfied and wanting a more complete closure. There were some loose ends left dangling.
Overall a solid listen, try and hang on through the middle and the end should be worth it.

The story is engrossing and you cheer for Mark throughout the entire book. Written with exceptional attention to detail, Wier has accomplished something accurate and entertaining. While those less into the sciences might struggle with all of the science detail, RC Bray's compelling storytelling make it engaging to listen to. Overal an excellent book and worth the awards it earned. A must hear!

I struggled to get into this book, despite Wheaton's incredible performance. I found myself drifting off and having to back up the story multiple times to know what had just happened. I finally got into the book about a third of the way in, when the action picked up and the characters were made aware of something much bigger than them. The characters were all so simple that it was hard to feel a genuine attachment to them. There were many times throughout where I felt even Cline wasn't sure of where he was going, or what he meant. The language was clunky too often. As the story progressed, I kept waiting for a spark of something amazing, but as the story neared the end, my hopes were dashed. The twist at the end left me very disappointed, and I listened the to remaining 20 minutes waiting to see what else Cline would do. Overall, I can't recommend this book. Perhaps a adolescent boy might enjoy it, but if you were a big fan of Ready Player One, prepare to be disappointed. Great job though to Wheaton, who knocked the performance out of the park. He was the only redeeming quality to this book.

Overall a story told well, with accompanying sound effects and music. This captivates younger children, but the repetitiveness of the music does distract older children (and adults) from the story too much. Less is more, especially with the theme they've chosen to repeat again and again. Cute story that kids will love listening to.
