This is the first Jodi Picoult novel I've read. it won't be the last. 10 stars. I cried. I paused and thought hard about the story and struggled to return to a book that held up an ugly image in its mirror. Mine.
Take your time reading this...with tissues at hand. Set it aside at times and chew over the content like the tough gristle racism is. Every white person should read this; so should other races. Perhaps then we would have a common starting point to discuss this chasm between us. I know ten thousand times more now about it than I did when I began this book.
I have stepped my toe into this raging river of understanding race. With eyes pried slightly open, I stretch out my hands to the torrent awaiting me, hopeful of patience and support of humankind of all races.
Thank you, Jodi Picoult, for my tears, my roiling gut, the inability to ever return to my ignorance.

If you only read the chapters about Mussolini and Hitler and the last two or so chapters, you will get "woke" like you've never been so before. Albright was there as the Axis developed and has witnessed the rise of nativist, nationalism, isolationism, and the rise of "otherism" and the unleashing of racism during the 2016 campaign and since.
That Madeleine Albright is seriously concerned should be enough to make the rest of us shake in our boots.
A MUST READ .

An overall good NR story. But the mermaid--both written and performed--was repetitive, dragging down flow.

Dreyer writes suspense with a little deft humor AND she gets the details right. Maggie is the trauma nurse you want when you roll into an ER--quick, smart, take-charge, caring. That she's an overachiever with a bruised soul, she covers with the best-written dialogue you'll find anywhere. Dreyer maintains the suspense throughout, forcing you to miss appointments and burn dinner as you MUST keep reading (or listening in my case).
I will plead once again for Eileen Dreyer to return to this genre!!!
