I have loved this series since I was 13 and was lured in by the covers. The books were eye opening, and Tanith Lee's writing has always been the bar that other writers needed to meet.

I was thrilled to find that the books are now available as audio, but lord the disappointment I felt with the narrator.

Her cadence, that repetitive lilt every other word, was monotonous and actually, legitimately infuriating. I guess I'm used to narrators who sound like they're actually internalizing and voicing the book, but this narrator has this reading voice that just grates. I bet she's amazing with quick ads and commercials with a few lines because she does have a lovely soothing voice, but listening to that repetitive cadence for hours was a real effort. after a while, I stopped hearing the words and was hypnotized in the worst way by the way she read. I was literally bobbing my head like a loon to the repetitive rhythm of her narration.

I should have tried the sample first but I immediately jumped on buying the audiobooks to use up my audible credits.

had to buy the audio book after watching the movie, and I am thrilled with the story. I tried reading Dune when I was younger, but I think I was too young for it and couldn't get my mind around the politics. I truly enjoyed the story and will probably get a hardcopy book to read.

The performances varied in quality. Wait till you get to the part where Ramallo, the seitch's reverend mother is transferring her power/memories/etc to Jessica and Ramallo's younger self shows up in the scene. Whoever voiced her was HILARIOUS. Like, hysterically bad. I had to rewind and listen again because it was the flattest, deadest, most monotone delivery ever. it was an interesting acting choice and it made what was meant to be dramatic and slightly terrifying, into a bad comedy.

I'm going to see if there are other versions with different narrators available: there has to be better out there!

love this book, adore Tanith Lee. was excited about this audiobook, but narrator is infuriating. the cadence of her spoken word is predictable, so I found myself distracted by the way she speaks, vs paying attention to the story. thankfully, audible accepts audiobook returns.

Narrator's voice grates: she sounds like she's hopped up on helium and speed. I had to drop speed to 90℅ as she read way too quickly.

I love Robin McKinley, but this isn't a favorite book. I think mainly because she uses made up slang like "sheer" to replace "cool." It sounds super cheesy, I won't lie. Also, it leaves a lot of back story untold: if she ever writes a sequel, I hope there's more info on the wars and magic usage in general.

all in all, a solid 3.5
