Historia
The Shongairi conquered Earth. In mere minutes, half the human race died, and our cities lay in shattered ruins. But the Shongairi didn't expect the survivors' tenacity. And, crucially, they didn't know that Earth harbored two species of intelligent, tool-using bipeds. One of them, long-lived and lethal, was hiding in the mountains of eastern Europe, the subject of fantasy and legend. When they emerged and made alliance with humankind, the invading aliens didn't stand a chance. Now, a select few blood-drinking immortals are on their way to the Shongairi homeworld.

Choice of narrator spoils this book...
Revisado: 04-20-23
I have listened to Ralph Lister before (Alias Hook) and he is a good narrator when he sticks to his natural accents. His "Southern American" accent is nearly unendurable. Trying to make it through, but this seems destined for a return request and old-fashioned reading on paper or e-book.

In the midst of World War II, James is training for the Royal Air Force, while going home to Yorkshire whenever possible to see his very pregnant wife, Helen. Musing on past adventures through the dales, visiting with old friends, and introducing scores of new and amusing characters—animal and human alike—Herriot enthralls with his uncanny ability to spin a most engaging and heartfelt yarn.

Perfect choice of narrator!
Revisado: 03-01-23
Nicholas Ralph brings a warm and personable voice to the memoirs of Alf Wight, AKA James Herriot. His knack for accents is stellar, and his natural brogue is like a warm sweater on a cold night in the Yorkshire Dales…

A startling crime with dozens of victims. Appearing out of nowhere to horrify the quiet resort town of Sanibel Island, Florida, dozens of identical, ordinary-looking shoes float in on the tide and are washed up on the tropical beach—each one with a crudely severed human foot inside.

Don’t believe the haters
Revisado: 06-22-22
There are several reviewers who did not enjoy Jefferson Mays’ performance. They are wrong. Mr. Mays, while definitely not René Auberjonois, is a capable and worthy successor to the Pendergast mantle.
This is one of the more entertaining Pendergast novels, and both the plot and his competent narration make it an enjoyable listen well worth the credit.

I agree with The Admiral, Robert Heinlein... "Possibly the greatest Science Fiction novel ever written" at that point in history... Narration was outstanding and the scope of the story is mind expanding...

Historia
In the early 1800s, Nicholas, Jessica, and Jon Santa attempt the first human trek to the North Pole and stumble upon an ancient race of people left over from the Ice Age. They are short, fat, and hairy. They slide across the ice on scaly soles and carve their homes in the ice that floats on the Arctic Ocean. The elven are adapted to life in the extreme cold. They are as wise as they are ancient. Their scientific advancements have yielded great inventions - time-stopping devices and gravitational spheres that build living snowmen and genetically-modified reindeer that leap great distances.

Possibly the worst narration ever...
Revisado: 05-06-15
Stilted awkward narration. Hackneyed, cliché riddled characters. The premise of immortal, technologically advanced "elven" is done poorly. The narrator has no sense of pacing and emotion. Don't waste your credit, I will certainly be trying to get mine back...

Oliver Wyman was great, as usual. He made the best of a overly-stretched plot. It could have been 25% shorter without sacrificing any of the story arcs...

Decent Narrator, horrible book...
Revisado: 05-31-13
Would you try another book from Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey and/or Emily Durante?
I like Emily Durante, she is a competent and entertaining narrator given solid material. Unfortunately this was not solid material. I am done with Todd McCaffrey and grieve at not only the passing of Anne, but of the exceptional stories that this series was justifiably famous and beloved for.
What was most disappointing about Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey ’s story?
I began listening to this book and got about an hour into it before I had to stop. I listened to the whole Harper Hall of Pern trilogy over the last week to scrub it from my mind and reacquaint myself with Anne's earlier genius. I picked this book back up and made it through only another 30 minutes today, and I am done. Anne was never shy about sexuality in the original series, but her collaborations with Todd and his solo efforts read like GLAAD recruiting propaganda. Additionally, the strong female characters of the original stories (Lessa, Menolly, Manora, Silvina, etc.) have been replaced with LGBT caricatures who unintentionally parody earlier strengths, and emasculate every male they come into contact with...
No more please...
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Emily is a strong performer, but the material renders her performance shallow and cloying...
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Sadness for the state of the series now that the reins have been passed to Todd. Disappointment that he has caved to politically correct agendas, or that he has pushed his own agenda into this series...

Historia
Once the Church of God Awaiting dominated all the kingdoms of Safehold. Then, after centuries of stasis, the island kingdom of Charis began to defy the edicts of Mother Church—egged on, some say, by the mysterious warrior-monk Merlin Athrawes, who enjoys the Charisian royal family's absolute trust. What vanishingly few people know is that Merlin is the cybernetic avatar of a young woman a thousand years dead, felled in the war in which aliens destroyed Earth...and that since awakening, his task has been to restart the history of the long-hidden human race.

A bit of research prior to narrating maybe!?
Revisado: 09-22-12
What made the experience of listening to Midst Toil and Tribulation the most enjoyable?
I am one hour into it and and not enjoying anything about the monotone reading with words and names pronounced completely opposite previous narrations...
Can we PLEASE bring back Oliver Wyman now?!
Would you be willing to try another one of Kevin T. Collins???s performances?
Not unless he is the only reader in a series. He obviously didn't bother to listen to previous books to pick up consistent pronunciation and accents.

Soulless Sex
Revisado: 11-11-05
This work is filled with trite, stereotyped characters and sex scenes, lightweight, cliche-ridden treatment of Hindu philosophy, and egregious use of the word WOW! That being said, no one can accuse the author of having an unimaginative fantasy life. This book is a hardcore, formulaic melange of the erotic components of innumerable Harlequin romances underpinned by Eastern Mysticism. It will appeal to bored housewives (Cliche intended) and horny teenage boys...

Great Book, Barely Adequate Narration
Revisado: 10-05-04
Once Again, Terry Brooks has drawn us into the Four Lands, and now The Forbidding, with powerful images and intricate plottings. The relationships between enemies and comrades, men and nature, are well thought out and tightly constructed. I wish I could say the same for the narrator. The reading is adequate to convey the basic feelings Mr. Brooks is trying to evoke, but just barely. I found that the dramatic range of Mr. Boehmer was lacking, and he resorted to awkward voicings for inhuman charcters that were more distracting than menacing.
Scott Brick has done an outstanding job of bringing power and finesse to the world of Shannara and it's denizens thus far, and it is disappointing to lose the mental pictures of the characters that we, the listeners, have built in our minds in previous books in the series.
It is especially galling that the change in narrators has been made right in the middle of the High Druid story arc. It has taken away from the experience of this newest volume. You find yourself constantly comparing the readers instead of being drawn into the story.
If the final volume of the series, Straken, continues with the current reader, I don't see myself listening to it. I'll read the book and let my imagination do the rest.
